If you’re a fan of a comic book, you want a storyline you love to be treated right when it is adapted in a TV show or movie. The fights have to be hard-hitting and the emotional moments have to strike you in the heart. Invincible has at least a dozen of those moments throughout the series and the Invincible War (Invincible volume 12 "Still Standing") was one of them. Thankfully, the franchise is in good hands when it comes to Prime Video's TV series.

Invincible season 3 has been slowly building towards the Invincible War and episode 7, titled "What Have I Done?", adapted it. The question was: Could it do it justice? This story was more than just variants of Mark Grayson flying around the world and being evil. They each had to look and act differently depending on their backstory and who they encountered. For example, one hated their mother Debbie and wanted to kill her again while another loved and missed her dearly. That had to come across as genuine otherwise their appearance would have sounded flat; thankfully, it was pulled off to perfection. That can be credited to the great work of Steven Yeun.

Steven Yeun did a fantastic job. He showed a tremendous voice-acting range as each of the variants, ensuring that each one sounded different from the others. Some of them were crazy while the one next to him could be calm calm. That couldn’t have been easy, especially when you look back and see how some of the voice changes or speech patterns were subtly altered.

Maybe the most important part of the Invincible War was how it affected the people not named Mark Grayson. Chief among them was Rex Splode. His death in the comics was heartbreaking, but it was more so in the show. Jason Mantzoukas was an amazing casting choice. He was just as believable as playing a jerk as he was being sympathetic. The evolution of his character was the perfect lead-up to his sacrifice. And since it happened over a longer period with Shrinking Rae being involved, it was portrayed even better than it was in the source material.

Another nice addition to the storyline was the conversation between Mark and Cecil. There was still no love lost between the two, but shockingly, there was respect. This wasn’t shown in the comics. But here, Cecil offered Mark an ear if he needed it. Mark said he was the last person he’d talk to, but thanked him anyway. It showed growth from Mark where that didn’t happen often in the source material.

And now we come to the end. Conquest arrives on Earth to get what the Viltrumite Empire says is rightfully there’s, Earth (and honestly the entire universe). This comes on the heels of Mark seeing another dead body caused by a version of him and he’s not in the mood. Unfortunately, Conquest doesn’t care. After explaining how upset he was, Mark says the only thing he wants is to hit something as hard as he can. Mark gets his wish, but he’s going to regret it. Stay tuned to Bam Smack Pow to see how this ends for Mark and the rest of the world.
