Season 4 of Prime Video’s Invincible may have been the best season of the show yet. It was full of both heartwarming and heartbreaking moments, action, and an eighth episode that probably left new fans worried about the future of the show.
The Viltrumites are on Earth, and there’s nothing that the world’s heroes can do about it. However, they weren’t given the option since Mark made the decision not to start a war that couldn’t have been won. A smart move, but Cecil will likely have words with Invincible when he hears about it.
Invincible season 4 is over, but season 5 is on the way
Sadly, episode 8 (titled “Don't Leave Me Hanging Here”) was the last one of the fourth season. Yep, it's the season finale, meaning that there won't be a new episode 9 of Invincible season 4 this week. Now, Prime Video does tend to do things out of the ordinary from time-to-time, but that doesn't mean that you should expect another new episode of the show in the foreseeable future. Invincible has completed its fourth season as the wait has now begun for season 5.
Prime Video have indeed renewed the show for a fifth season, with the cast already completing their voicework for the next episodes. That said, it is likely to be a bit of a wait before the next season, with the likely release window being spring 2027.
Everything was wrapped up perfectly at the end of season 4, and letting things breathe a bit between seasons is the right move (even if season 5 is likely close to being ready to go). Thankfully, if you want to know what happens in the Invincible story to learn more about the possible future of the show, the source material is available. And now is the right time to do that!
Now is the time to read the Invincible comics while you wait for season 5
There are 25 volumes of Image Comics’ Invincible, and most of season 4 can be found in volumes 13 (Growing Pains) and 14 (Invincible War). If you’ve read the source material, you know that some stories were added ahead of time for multiple reasons. Among them is that some things wouldn’t have worked on TV or in this era as they did previously. So rather than keep something that's unnecessary, outdated, or filler, it's removed to create a more quality program.
Since there are another 11 volumes and even more storylines to go through, reading what is coming can help with the anticipation of what the future holds for Prime Video’s hit show. You’ll also learn what previously happened to give you a better idea of what changed and why. Among the alterations are the fact that Robert Kirkman and the rest of the creative team added more representation to the show.
As a comic book fan, I always look at projects based on stories I know as a different universe. This makes it easy to separate the show or movie from the source material they adapted. And therefore, I can enjoy any new or changed stories, too. In the case of Invincible, the TV series may have done a better job. A lot of it can be attributed to writer Robert Kirkman's evolution.

During an interview in The Wrap, Kirkman mentioned why he changed the race and genders of certain characters. “One of the downsides of Invincible is Cory Walker and I were like 23 and 21 when we started that book, and your default when you’re not really paying attention is yourself.” Kirkman went on to explain, saying, “Every time we introduce another character, ‘Oh look! It’s another white male! Who knew?’ It’s just a shortcoming that we hadn’t quite noticed and done our due diligence to correct.”
I normally do a yearly reread of Invincible as a means of research for my articles and entertainment. As I read, I notice that the series changes its tone and how the characters interact with each other, and adds a more diverse group of characters. It’s easy to forget that the series went on for 15 years (2003-2018). In that time, a lot of things changed.
It’s good to know that the creative team of Robert Kirkman, artist Ryan Ottley, and more have evolved the story as it went along, while also improving on so many elements within the TV show as well. Speaking of which, what they have accomplished since shows that as the world grows and changes, it’s our job to do so with it.
