Matt Reeves and Mattson Tomlin finally finished the script for The Batman 2 at the end of last month, which means the film can finally move that much closer towards production ahead of its October 1, 2027, release date. And while details about the plot for the Robert Pattinson-led sequel are scarce at the moment, we do know that DC Studios co-CEO and Superman writer and director James Gunn praised the script.
Deadline reports that, when Gunn was attending the world premiere of Superman in Los Angeles, he was asked by reporters about his thoughts on the script for The Batman 2, and he simply replied by saying “It’s great.”
James Gunn's hopeful thoughts on The Batman Part II
While James Gunn's response was no doubt short and lacking in details, the fact that Gunn thinks highly of the script is clearly a great sign. Especially since the period of over three years between the release of The Batman and the completion of the sequel’s script led some to worry that there might have been some issues going on behind the scenes. But thankfully, we now know that the script has been finished and that Gunn approves of it, making the anticipation for the sequel all the more palpable. And it’s also worth noting that Gunn walked away with a smile before he could be asked more questions about The Batman 2, since he clearly did not want to say too much about the upcoming film.

To call the upcoming DC Studios movie one of the most anticipated sequels on the horizon would be a major understatement. Fans have been ready for this one since the credits rolled on the first film, and the recent HBO / Max miniseries The Penguin has only increased that anticipation.
The Batman was released in 2022, and it grossed an impressive $772 million at the global box office, in addition to earning strong reviews. The almost three-hour film focused on Batman (Robert Pattinson), as he tried to solve a string of murders in Gotham City, with the supporting cast including Zoë Kravitz, Jeffrey Wright, Paul Dano, Colin Farrell, Peter Sarsgaard, Andy Serkis, and John Turturro. Reeves directed the film and wrote the script alongside Peter Craig.
Reeves is also returning to the director’s chair for the second instalment. And we will know if The Batman 2 ends up being worth the five-year wait when it finally opens in wide release on October 1, 2027.
