James Gunn’s start at Warner Bros. began long before DC Studios launched 2025’s Superman. Back in 2021, he directed The Suicide Squad for the now-defunct DC Extended Universe. After the DCEU's previous Suicide Squad movie, people were worried about whether this project would be as bad as the previous one. After a few minutes into Gunn's film, however, it was easy to see that the characters were never the original's problem; it was the direction that the movie took. That wasn't a problem in the sequel / reboot.

James Gunn added some lightheartedness in a film full of killers, violence, and mostly unknown villains/anti-heroes. He also managed to tell a story where the audience could feel bad for the protagonists. Learning that they all had trauma that affected their future lives as criminals made everyone sympathetic.

With Gunn now taking over as co-chairman and CEO of DC Studios (along with Peter Safran), the reset button was pressed on everything. Sadly, other than Peacemaker and Amanda Waller, none of the characters in The Suicide Squad appear to have a place in James Gunn’s new DC Universe. Well, that was the case until recently.

More DCEU returns possible in the DCU as James Gunn has hopeful updates about two beloved characters

One thing you can count on with James Gunn is that he will give interviewers brilliant but cryptic answers. He’s been in the game long enough to know to be careful with whatever he says. Otherwise, he would run the risk of ruining surprises in upcoming projects. Or, and this could be worse, give fans hope for them to be ultimately disappointed. That’s where Harley Quinn and Bloodsport’s future comes in.

In a recent interview with Entertainment Weekly, Gunn was asked about the future of Harley Quinn in his DCU and whether Margot Robbie could return to the role. He simply responded with: “That will be revealed down the line.”

Furthermore, the topic of Idris Elba’s Bloodsport came up, too. This time, Gunn was more direct, saying: “I definitely am always looking for a place to put Bloodsport and figuring that out.”

That means there is a possibility that two of the best characters from the previous DCEU regime could return, and that's a very exciting prospect.

First, let’s address his comments about Harley Quinn. I’m going to predict that Margot Robbie will return, and as Harley Quinn. Sure, Gunn didn’t say that this was a definite thing. He said we’d have to find out down the line. This leads me to think he knows something is happening. Unfortunately, I don’t know if it’s a long-term thing. We could be looking at a cameo in season 2 of Peacemaker instead of something in an upcoming Batman project. It would be disappointing, but maybe her appearance leads to people saying they want more of her. Either way, more of Robbie's portrayal of Harley Quinn would be a great thing as she was clearly one of the best aspects of the DCEU.

When it comes to Idris Elba, let’s be honest. Who doesn’t want to see more of him? He’s among the most talented people in the world and cooked as Bloodsport. Having him return would be a gift to everyone involved. Maybe we get the moment where he shoots Superman with a Kryptonite bullet. Imagine how the internet would react to that.

For now, we’ll have to wait and see what’s next for both actors and DC Comics characters. Thankfully, James Gunn continues to give fans pieces of his puzzle. Eventually, we’ll see the entire picture and smile.
