James Spader is widely regarded as one of the most charismatic actors of all time. A big name of the John Hughes '80s romance movies era, he expanded his horizons into the '90s and 2000s with more heavy-hitting roles in the likes of Boston Legal and The Blacklist, cementing himself as one of the most versatile actors to ever grace the screen. To say that we are blessed that he joined the Marvel Cinematic Universe back in 2015 would be an understatement.
Spader voiced the villainous Ultron in Avengers: Age of Ultron, providing what could have been a one-note, robotic villain with genuine gravitas. It ensured that fans of the one-and-done villain were left wanting more, which is why - now that we are getting that "more" - we are all so excited to see him return to the franchise in VisionQuest. In doing so, he will make MCU history.
James Spader sets non-Hulk record for the longest gap between MCU appearances
James Spader returns to the world of Marvel Studios in upcoming Disney Plus series VisionQuest, portraying a human avatar version of Ultron that exists within the head of Paul Bettany's Vision (although the trailer has confirmed that he will appear in his robotic form, too). This naturally sent the internet into a meltdown for two reasons. A: Ultron died in Avengers: Age of Ultron in 2015. And B: James Spader is back in the MCU!
Spader's return comes 11 years after his starring role in the second Avengers movie, which is pretty history-making. In fact, this places the legendary actor fourth on the overall list of Marvel actors with the longest gaps between MCU appearances. The Top 3 on that list all debuted in 2008's The Incredible Hulk, which was largely ignored by the rest of the MCU franchise for over a decade (and would therefore explain why those actors had lengthy gaps between their MCU appearances). If we were to momentarily take that film off the board, it would actually put Spader at the top of the list.
To give you an idea of where Spader would land on that overall list, let's take a look at the actors with the longest gaps between MCU appearances, this time including those who appeared in The Incredible Hulk:

Yeah, that's quite an impressive record. All of them are, to be honest, as it really reflects how larger-than-life the MCU has become. We can go for years without seeing some iconic characters but it doesn't mean that they aren't still out there saving lives or causing mayhem (or sometimes both!). The Multiverse Saga has resulted in longer gaps between character appearances, so it honestly wouldn't be surprising to see that list grow over the course of the next few years as the gaps for some actors get longer and longer.
Interestingly, the Multiverse Saga has also presented Marvel stars with the chance to return to the franchise years after their apparent deaths to play alternate variants of their respective characters. While Ultron's comeback technically applies here, it also doesn't as he is simply a copy of the original version that is trapped in Vision's mind.
VisionQuest centers on Vision's own attempt to rediscover who he is. Now known as the White Vision, his life is both emotionally and physically lacking color, so he spends his nights in his own head trying to remind himself of who he was. He has his memories from his time as an Avenger, he knows he loved Wanda Maximoff, and that she created fictional children for the pair out of magic in WandaVision. What he doesn't know is that those magical kids are very, very real - and with Ultron's help, he will come across one of them, Tommy (Ruaridh Mollica) - likely setting the stage for a family reunion in the near-future.
VisionQuest is the third installment in the WandaVision trilogy, coming after the original series and previous spinoff Agatha All Along. It arrives on Disney Plus on October 14, 2026.
