Jason Momoa is returning to DC Studios as Lobo

When Supergirl: Women of Tomorrow hits screens, a FRAG friend will join her.

It's been the easiest fancasting in history, and arguably the worst-kept secret in CBMs, but it is official that Jason Momoa is coming back to the DC fold and will appear in Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow as the beloved anti-hero Lobo.

This is news that nerd nation has harped on since the hopeful renewal of Krypton: Season 3. Maybe earlier. In 2022, THR broke news that Jason Momoa had already met with James Gunn and Peter Safran to discuss "possibilities" about the alien bounty hunter coming to life and roaring along on prized Spacehog (a Road King from Harley Davidson, no less).

"Sources say the actor would lead another movie or franchise. The character of Lobo, a foul-mouthed cigar-chomping intergalactic bounty hunter, has been mentioned in connection with Momoa," Borys Kit indicated.

Way back in 2014, shortly after he was pinned for Arthur Curry, Momoa was vocal about the obvious doppelganger mystique connecting him and Lobo. Obviously, when James Gunn came to WBD, one of the first calls he made was to Momoa. The actor is known for his bravado, non-sensical approach to any role, and tangibility to absorb the role.

Although Conan was a total flop, there was no mistaking him for the Barbarian. But pay attention to him in other notable roles, such as Duncan Idaho in Dune, Baba Voss in See, Dante in Fast X, and the mighty Khal Drogo in Game of Thrones. Jason Momoa tends to vanish into the ether the more the role reflects how people gauge him in real life.

And now we have him in DC Studios and Lobo. What could this mean? Glad you asked.

What could Jason Momoa as Lobo mean to DC Studios

There is no mistaking that guy for Lobo. Talk about being born to play a part! As Gunn and Safran prepare us for Milly Alcock soaring to screens and rid her Rhaenyra Targaryen garb for some flashy spandex and a skirt, what can we expect from these two together?

According to ComicBook.com, this matchup was already scheduled in print. Tom King shared that he was asked to remove Lobo from the graphic novel, "Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow."

"That book began as me pitching a Lobo/Supergirl book, and it was my editor, Brittany Holzherr and Jamie Rich, who were like ‘No, take Lobo out and make Supergirl the Rooster Cogburn character. And so it wouldn’t exist without Jamie and Brittany.”

While Kara Zor-El and Lobo don't have a storied past in the comics, it's one that should get DC Studios fans eager for more. It began in Mark Waid's and George Perez's "The Brave and the Bold" series of 2007.

Supergirl and Green Lantern (Hal Jordan) encounter each other on a mission to Ventura, a planetwide casino, which sparks the Rann-Thanagar War. Somehow, they get separated (Hal is transported to Rann, about 4.5 light years from Earth-One) so she recruits Lobo.

Magic is made from there. The antihero from Czarnia is DC Comics' lore for his violent temperment and disdainful attitude. Think Wolverine -- superhuman strength, invulnerability, regenerative abilities, and a sarcasm motor at 11. Lobo is precisely what DC Studios needs to play along in this universe for a long time.

Jason Momoa should be more than giddy about finally being able to confirm the role. It's like the request he's been waiting for for over a decade. During Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom press junkets, he said as much.

"So, Lobo… I used to collect comics and I don’t do so much anymore, but he was always my favorite. And I’ve always wanted to play Lobo because I’m like, ‘Hello?.’ It’s pretty perfect. It’s the perfect role. I mean, listen, if they call me and ask me to play it? It’s a f*** yeah. But, I mean, that’s a guarantee. So, you don’t have to worry about that. But, I haven’t received that call. So, I don’t want to put any fake news out there but if they ever call me and ask me to play, or ask me to audition, I’m there," Momoa told Fandango in 2023.

We are in business! We are about to see "not a bad guy, just a guy who does bad things." Make them awful, Gunn. We're counting on it!

Craig Gillespie will direct from a script by Ana Nogueira. Production begins on January 13, 2025. Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow hits theaters on June 26, 2026
