The key to saving DC Comics' Absolute Universe is somebody no one saw coming

There are a lot of DC Comics characters that could have gone to the Absolute Universe, but this is the last person many people would have picked. However, it makes sense.

Free Comic Book Day is a holiday every comic book fan should pay attention to. It’s when comic book companies take the opportunity to give hints and previews about things to come in their upcoming stories. For Marvel, a clue was dropped that Miles Morales (Spider-Man) goes to Earth-6160 (the Ultimate Universe) to save his baby sister. There’s also something coming that’s connected to Peter Parker (Spider-Man), Venom (Mary Jane), and Eddie Brock (Carnage). For DC comics, there are a couple of major stories in their FCBD 2025 - Free Comic Book Day 2025: DC All In Special Edition No. 1 Special Edition (a mouthful of a title, to say the least).

First, Superman flies to space to stop a giant asteroid from hitting Earth. He destroys the first layer only to uncover that the rest of it is solid Kryptonite. As reported in January, a “massive extinction-level Kryptonite asteroid comes to Earth, leaving shards available to the wrong people." This writer’s favorite part is the story showing the second character to jump into the Absolute Universe (the first being Booster Gold). And, it should and shouldn't shock everyone to learn that it was Mirror Master.

  • Writer: Jeff Lemire
  • Artist: Giuseppe Camuncoli
  • Colorist: Romulo Fajardo Jr.

This story is being told through the eyes of the Absolute Universe’s Mirror Master as he's traveling throughout the world and observing his timeline’s Batman, Superman, and Wonder Woman. He mentions that each of them has a purpose, but Wonder Woman is the only one who seems to understand that she's always been destined for greater things. What’s more interesting is that Mirror Master has been connecting the dots of his universe for a while.

In his hideout are pictures and Post-it notes on his wall. He’s trying to connect things to make sense out of his universe. In the middle of them is the omega symbol. He doesn’t know what it means, but DC Comics fans know that this is Darkseid’s sign, and that he created the Absolute Universe in his image. Then, things get weirder for Mirror Master when his DC Comics doppelganger from Earth Prime appears.

After his alternate self steps through a mirror, he says, “Well, well, look what we have here. It’s a brave new world, aye? So, watta ya say… I’ll show you mine, if you show me yours?” Get your mind out of the gutter. He’s talking about sharing information about their respective universes.

"She moves with the confidence of someone who has always known they were meant for more. "
Absolute Mirror Master

Mirror Master isn’t someone that many comic book fans may take seriously. That being said, they should, and it makes sense that he’d be the one to break the barrier between the Absolute Universe and the DC Comics Earth-Prime. He’s smart enough to adjust his gun to travel across the multiverse. More importantly, using him to surprise fans was brilliant. It was unexpected and puts more respect on his name.

Hopefully, this leads to novice comic fans understanding what many already know: Mirror Master isn’t a joke. It'll be interesting to see what changes DC Comics makes with him in the Absolute Universe. So far, he looks more like a hero than a Rogue and that won't be good for Earth-Prime's version of him.
