Kraven the Hunter is currently tracking to make less than disgraced superhero movie

It's looking like Kraven the Hunter is not going to have the best opening weekend.

Kraven the Hunter will be hitting theaters on Dec. 13, but don’t feel guilty if you didn’t realize the film was coming out so soon because Sony hasn’t exactly been promoting the film… and it seems the lack of promotion is about to result in yet another superhero film underperforming at the box office as 2024 comes to close.

Early projections for the Aaron Taylor Johnson-led film are putting Kraven the Hunter’s opening weekend in the $20-$25 million range. Should those projections hold, Kraven the Hunter would come in well under the box office opening weekend earnings of Sony’s critically panned Jared Leto-led Morbius. In fact, those projections are almost half of what Morbius ended up grossing in its opening weekend when the film pulled in $39 million domestically.

Considering Kraven the Hunter actually looks like a good movie, it’s disappointing that the film is on track to somehow make less than Morbius at the box office during its opening weekend but we can’t say we’re surprised.

Sony hasn’t exactly been promoting the film and it doesn’t help that the film is coming out just weeks after three of this fall’s biggest movies opened in theaters with the release of Wicked, Gladiator II, and Moana 2, all of which have gotten heavy promotional campaigns. It also doesn’t help that Sony hasn’t exactly had the best track record with its recent live-action Marvel films with the Spider-Man and Venom films standing out as the sole hits for the studio, as this is enough to scare off some moviegoers.

The good news is that Kraven the Hunter is at least projected to make more than Madame Web which opened to a mere $15 million domestically in February, making it the lowest-grossing superhero opening. But still, Kraven the Hunter isn’t looking to be the hit that Sony likely hoped it would be when they first greenlit the project.

Of course, there is always a chance that the film could exceed expectations and we hope it does; however, it’s not looking like the final comic book movie of the year is going to end the year on a high note. But if the projections do stand, then it’s looking like Sony is about to have another major miss on its hands.

The 2024 superhero movie opening weekend totals haven’t been the best

Kraven the Hunter is about to close out what has been an unfortunate year for superhero movies at the domestic box office filled with more flops than successes.

Madame Web kicked things off in February 2024 with an abysmal $15 million opening weekend, the smallest of a high-budget superhero film. Fortunately for Sony, Venom The Last Dance fared much better during its opening weekend pulling in $51 million in its first weekend at the domestic box office, but there wasn’t too much to celebrate as this was the lowest opening weekend for a Venom film.

There also wasn’t much to celebrate over at DC Studios this year. The studio’s only 2024 release Joker: Folie à Deux flopped at the box office with an opening weekend of $40 million.

The only studio that truly had something to celebrate this year was Marvel Studios. Its sole 2024 theatrical release, Deadpool and Wolverine, raked in a whopping $211 million in its domestic opening weekend. Not only does that total make Deadpool and Wolverine the most successful superhero movie of 2024, but the film also enjoyed the biggest opening weekend of 2024 period. Deadpool and Wolverine’s opening weekend is nearly double the combined opening weekend totals of Madame Web, Venom: The Last Dance, and Joker: Folie à Deux.
