Nothing can stop the momentum of Deadpool and Wolverine. Marvel's most unlikely dream team continues to break box-office records six weeks into its run, proving itself to be the force to be reckoned fans were hoping it would be, with its performance worthy of Marvel Studios' classic days of non-stop box office domination.

The film has now grossed an incredible $1.2 billion, making it the highest-grossing R-rated movie of all time. If you've been keeping up with its performance, you probably already knew that because it accomplished that incredible feat just in under two weeks; not bad for the Marvel Cinematic Universe's first foray into R-rated territory.

The film's momentum continues to carry it through week after week, as it has held onto the top spot at the domestic box office five of those six weekends, regaining it after Alien: Romulus took it on its opening weekend. And that success has seen it recently surpass another major movie; a major movie that actually belongs to the same franchise as it.

Deadpool and Wolverine has now exceeded Iron Man 3's takings at the box office

Deadpool and Wolverine has done the unthinkable, managing to outperform none other than the face of the MCU franchise himself Iron Man. Yes, that's right; the 2024 movie has now out-grossed Iron Man 3 at the box office, sailing past its impressive numbers.

Released in 2013, Iron Man 3 is one of the MCU's most underrated outings, but its box office performance was monumental, as the Robert Downey Jr. pic had a global cume of $1,214,811,252. That made it the second-highest-grossing film in the MCU franchise at the time of its release, as it came in just behind 2012's The Avengers; the movie that sent the franchise into the stratosphere, with an incredible gross of $1.5 billion.

While the Iron Man film series was always one of Marvel's most consistent performers, the third one benefitted from the Avengers bump. So many new fans had jumped into the saga after the game-changing team-up movie, which brought Iron Man face to face with Captain America, Thor, Black Widow, Hawkeye, and the Incredible Hulk. And with that, Iron Man 3's takings surged way past the $500 million and $600 million takings of Iron Man and Iron Man 2.

Meanwhile, Deadpool and Wolverine has become the highest-grossing X-Men movie ever and the 11th MCU movie to cross the $1 billion mark, as it has managed to gross a total of $1,262,208,117 thus far, which takes it just past Tony Stark's third adventure, as well as other movies such as The Fate of the Furious and Incredibles 2. It will soon surpass movies such as Beauty and the Beast, Frozen, Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom, and Star Wars: The Last Jedi.

As for what other MCU movies it could surpass, its closest contenders are 2018's Black Panther, which has an incredible worldwide gross of $1,347,280,838, and 2015's Avengers: Age of Ultron, which made $1,402,809,54. As Wade Wilson and Logan's cinematic showdown is expected to gross somewhere between $1.3 and $1.4 billion before its box-office run comes to an end, it's still possible that it could surpass both of those, too.

2012's The Avengers and its $1.5 billion may be a bit more out-of-reach, but if Deadpool and Wolverine has taught us anything, it's never to underestimate this outrageous duo.
