Marvel is usually two steps ahead, planning projects set to arrive over the next few years and, in the case of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, all the way through to 2042. This level of preparation allows the superhero giant to have a very consistent output of yearly releases across movies, television, comic books, and, of course, video games. Unfortunately, things don't always go according to plan, and some highly anticipated projects never see the light of day.
In the video game department, Marvel cancelled a Black Panther single-player game, while fans grow worried that Marvel 1943: Rise of Hydra has met a similar fate, especially since the title was announced in 2021 and still has no release date in sight. This pattern also seemed to apply to Marvel's Venom—a rumored spin-off title set in the Insomniac Spider-Man universe and starring the Lethal Protector. Miles Morales' voice actor, Nadji Jeter, confirmed the game was in development, but it was ultimately axed after Tony Todd's unfortunate passing in 2024. However, a new report suggests the iconic Spider-Man villain will get the spotlight after all.
Marvel's Venom is still in development according to a new report
According to industry insider NateTheHate2, Marvel's Venom is "very much still in development," although he isn't sure when it will be announced. Suspicions about the spin-off started to arise since the release of Marvel's Spider-Man 2 back in 2023. The last entry in Insomniac's arachnid superhero saga featured a level where players were able to take control of the Lethal Protector and wreak havoc across Oscorp Industries. The fact that the iconic villain had his own entire set of gameplay mechanics to be used in seemingly just one mission raised some eyebrows, and fans started to question whether there was more to his story.
Those suspicions were confirmed when Insomniac was unfortunately hacked in December 2023, and it was revealed that Marvel's Venom was being worked on. Unfortunately, the existence of a Marvel's Spider-Man 2 DLC was also confirmed as part of the hack, but Insomniac ultimately decided to cancel it. As such, many feared the Lethal Protector's stand-alone project would also get axed, especially since some of its story beats were already out for the world to see. On the bright side, Insomniac isn't one to back out of developing a fun and ambitious game.
In 2025, gaming outlet MP1st reported that Marvel's Venom was still in development and on track for a 2027 release date. Additionally, it was revealed that Eddie Brock will be the one to bond with the symbiote this time, as opposed to Harry Osborn. Cletus Kasady's Carnage is set to be the main antagonist, and Anti-Venom will also have a role to play. This will be a new, monstrous-looking iteration of the character, completely separate from Peter Parker (who also had an Anti-Venom suit).
With Marvel's Wolverine's release just around the corner, Insomniac has been focusing all of its efforts on promoting Logan's upcoming adventure. As such, the earliest we are likely to hear about Marvel's Venom is at the Game Awards 2026, but it is all the more likely that the spin-off will be officially announced in 2027 to avoid affecting Marvel's Wolverine's sales throughout the holiday season. But even if the wait turns out to be a little longer than originally anticipated, all signs suggest the game will eventually see the light of day.
Nadji Jeter and Spider-Man voice actor Yuri Lowenthal have confirmed that a Marvel's Spider-Man 3 game is also in the works and that Peter Parker is bound to come out of retirement to fight against a bigger threat. Furthermore, the post-credits scene of Marvel's Spider-Man 2 teased that the Green Goblin and Doctor Octopus will team up to fight a common threat: the friendly neighborhood hero.
The Marvel's Spider-Man franchise is more alive than ever, and there are even more opportunities to expand the story now that Marvel's Wolverine is just around the corner. After all, these two games take place in the same world, and as is the case with any two Marvel franchises, there could be a potential crossover further down the line.
Marvel's Wolverine will be released on Sep. 15, 2026.
