The world is ready for Avengers: Doomsday. We are almost just two months away from the biggest movie event of the year and it is sure to make an impression on moviegoers all over the globe as anticipation builds for Doctor Doom's arrival in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. It's a moment that has been two years in the making, with MCU veteran Robert Downey Jr. set to return to the franchise to bring the comic book villain to life.
It's going to be a big swing for the Marvel Studios franchise but it's one that all involved are ready to take in order to kickstart the conclusion of the Multiverse Saga. And they have been going all out on the promotion ever since we reached the halfway point of the year, unveiling new posters, stills, and trailers to set the stage for the upcoming event.
Speaking of which, the newest trailer has confirmed what it's really all about for the villain of the piece.
Doctor Doom's purpose is revealed in haunting Avengers: Doomsday trailer
Marvel Studios unveiled a brand new trailer for Avengers: Doomsday at the D23 Entertainment Showcase and it was truly awe-inspiring. While there was some familiar footage in there, it spotlighted the one element that the previous teaser trailer intentionally ignored: Doctor Doom, and the truth behind his impending multiverse-ending actions.
The clip makes it clear that Doctor Doom is out for one thing: Revenge. According to the Fantastic Four's Sue Storm, the man formerly known as Victor von Doom was once kind and decent, but tragedy struck and took his wife and son from him. And in that moment, Doctor Doom was born. Now, he has a haunting purpose of his own - one that can mean only bad things for the multiverse.
Watch the trailer yourself and see Doom in action:
As Doom can be heard telling the Avengers (and presumably the X-Men and the Fantastic Four, too), they have all "lived stolen lives" and now it is time that they "must give them back". One might wonder what it actually is that he is referring to, but the vast majority of Marvel fans already know what - or who - he is referring to. In fact, an old rumor about the plot of Avengers: Doomsday confirmed as much months ago - and now the trailer has given us the official confirmation that we have been waiting for.

Months ago, a rumor surfaced about the upcoming MCU movie that claimed Doctor Doom would specifically seek out Steve Rogers for vengeance. It also claimed that Victor would hold the former Captain America personally responsible for the deaths of his wife and child, blaming his actions in the conclusion of Avengers: Endgame - when he went back in time using the Infinity Stones and started a happy, loving, long life with Peggy Carter - as the event that caused an incursion in his world.
If you watched Avengers Endgame: Encore, you will know that Loki's arrival outside of Steve and Peggy's house very much confirms that the pair's happy ending will indeed play a role in Avengers: Doomsday. And given that the God of Stories has promised to help the pair, it's a pretty safe bet that saving the day isn't the only reason that they are coming back.
Doom is going to eradicate the multiverse with incursions in a bid to steal everybody else's happy endings out of revenge over the fact that he lost his own. Steve, Peggy, and their son are now at the top of his hit-list. Here's hoping that the Avengers, X-Men, Fantastic Four, and Loki can stop him, because - as Thor says in the first trailer - they are going to need a miracle.
Avengers: Doomsday arrives in movie theaters on December 18, 2026.
