Slowly but surely, Marvel has started to pull back the curtain on Avengers: Doomsday—the studio's next ambitious event and its first big crossover project in over seven years. Four different teasers have been released, two different trailers have graced our screens, and we know most of the cast who will take part in the next superhero adventure. However, Doomsday's follow-up, Avengers: Secret Wars, is still shrouded in a lot of mystery.
The very last installment in the ongoing Multiverse Saga is set to change the Marvel Cinematic Universe as we know it. After all, Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige confirmed that Secret Wars will act as a "reset" for many ongoing storylines, while new heroes will make their debuts during the ensemble film.
Perhaps one of the biggest changes that audiences will witness is the introduction of a new generation of X-Men, led by Kit Connor's Cyclops and set to feature the likes of Sadie Sink's Jean Grey, Samara Weaving's Emma Frost, Inde Navarrette's Rogue, and Maya Boyd's Storm. But in an unexpected turn of events, it seems mentors will share the screen with their proteges before bidding their official farewell.
James Marsden's Cyclops, Ian McKellen's Magneto, Channing Tatum's Gambit, and Tom Hiddleston's Loki will appear in Avengers: Secret Wars
It was widely theorized that Avengers: Doomsday would mark the last appearance of the X-Men variants from the 20th Century Fox era. Ian McKellen's Magneto, Patrick Stewart's Professor X, Kelsey Grammer's Beast, Alan Cumming's Nightcrawler, Rebecca Romijn's Mystique, and James Marsden's Cyclops will all jump back into action for one final stand that's set to pull no punches. They will also be accompanied by Channing Tatum's Gambit, who made his debut in 2024's Deadpool & Wolverine. Fortunately, 2026 may not be the last time we'll see some of these characters.
According to industry insider James Mack, the established versions of Cyclops, Magneto, and Gambit will appear in Avengers: Secret Wars. The last two don't have new actors lined up to play their roles in the upcoming team of X-Men, explaining why we'll see their only live-action counterparts steal the spotlight once more. However, Cyclops is in a very interesting position because we could see James Marsden interact with Kit Connor's version of the character.
Multiple reports indicate that the new version of the X-Men will be introduced during Avengers: Secret Wars. That's why it seemed unlikely to see some members of the old guard appear in the very same movie as well. However, this wouldn't be the first time the MCU has featured multiple versions of one character in a single adventure.
Similarly, James Mack revealed that Tom Hiddleston's Loki will appear in Avengers: Secret Wars. While the God of Mischief's return wouldn't seem like a big surprise at first glance, there's a reason why audiences could jump out of their seats in excitement when he enters the picture. But before we break down his potential role in both Avengers: Doomsday and Secret Wars, consider this one last warning: There could be MAJOR spoilers ahead.
Every Avengers movie features at least one shocking death, and Doomsday will be no different. Multiple sources have indicated that Loki will die off-screen, and it will not be until Thor reaches the TVA that he will find his brother's corpse with his heart ripped out. This could be a heartbreaking scene, especially for those eagerly waiting to see the God of Thunder finally cross paths with the God of Mischief. On the bright side, this could be just one more illusion from the infamous trickster.
Avengers: Secret Wars will supposedly reveal that Loki simply staged his own death (which wouldn't be a first for the MCU). He will then embark on a quest alongside Mobius and Sylvie to restore his own powers, which will reportedly be stolen by Doctor Doom in Avengers: Doomsday and used to create Battleworld.
Avengers: Secret Wars could finally be the movie to give us Thor and Loki's reunion after a fake-out scene in Doomsday. Meanwhile, the old generation of X-Men could share an adventure with the newcomers in the final entry of the Multiverse Saga too. Of course, it's always important to take rumors with a grain of salt, but by the looks of it, Avengers: Secret Wars could have even more surprises than its predecessor.
