Marvel confirms the MCU crossover we all thought was impossible

Marvel Studios has shown us that anything is possible in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, especially when the Multiverse Saga is involved. The franchise has brought stars from across the realms of the MCU's multiverse together, shown through the likes of Tom Holland's Spider-Man meeting his two predecessors (Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield's Spider-Men) and Wanda Maximoff's run-in Professor X. And, with Avengers: Doomsday on the horizon, we have still only scratched the surface of what's possible.

However, before we get to Doctor Doom's arrival, we will have VisionQuest. The long-awaited third chapter in the WandaVision Trilogy (after WandaVision and Agatha All Along), it will see Paul Bettany's Vision attempt to rediscover his identity after being resurrected from the dead by SWORD (and Wanda's magic). In doing so, he will cross over with some unexpected guests from the MCU's past. While some of them will have new faces, one of them is instantly recognizable - potentially confirming something else in the process.

VisionQuest seemingly confirms Agent Carter series is canon through Edwin Jarvis return

Marvel Studios has unveiled the very first trailer for VisionQuest in honor of D23. The thrilling first look shows us how Vision - now the White Vision after the events of WandaVision - is still struggling to reconcile his restored memories with the somewhat emotionless being that he is now. Without the heart of what made him an Avenger, he is lost. And with that, he relies on the help and guidance of the various AIs in his head - namely supervillain Ultron, with James Spader reprising the role.

However, he also leans on FRIDAY, EDITH, Dum-E, and U, as well as Tony Stark's original AI JARVIS. As Bettany voiced JARVIS in the MCU before he became Vision, he can't play the character's human manifestation here. Instead, the role is played by none other than James D'Arcy, who played Howard Stark's butler and driver Edwin Jarvis in Marvel's Agent Carter.

This is pretty monumental as it would essentially confirm that the events of Agent Carter are indeed canon to the Marvel Cinematic Universe - an ongoing debate that has erupted about the validity of that show and fellow series Marvel's Agents of SHIELD, which both aired on ABC throughout the 2010s. Although both featured stars from the MCU movies (Hayley Atwell reprises her Captain America: The First Avenger role of Peggy Carter in Agent Carter while Clark Gregg plays his Avengers character Agent Coulson in SHIELD), the fact that they were made by Marvel Television - which was a separate studio at the time - has resulted in their places within the canon being questioned.

Furthermore, it doesn't help that the first season of Agent Carter is essentially just a season-long retelling of the 2013 short-of-the-same-name, exploring Peggy Carter's first year as an agent of the SSR. As Marvel Studios confirms that the short is canon, it would suggest that the events of the ABC TV series are not - after all, Peggy can't go on the same adventure twice. And that would suggest that the Edwin Jarvis she met - and affectionately referred to as "Mr. Jarvis" - was not canon to the MCU franchise either.

However, D'Arcy did end up reprising his role in 2019's Avengers: Endgame, when Tony Stark travelled back in time to the 1970s and crossed paths with his father - seeing Jarvis drive him off outside of SHIELD. That was a monumental moment in and of itself, but as Endgame marked the end of the Infinity Saga, it was allowed to be a chalked up to a meaningful Easter Egg to Agent Carter without creating too many issues that needed explaining. Bringing D'Arcy back for VisionQuest, however, does force us to once again ask if the Edwin Jarvis we met in Agent Carter is indeed canon to the MCU.

Granted, D'Arcy is, again, portraying a human avatar for the AI JARVIS, but as Tony Stark's digital friend was based on his father's loyal friend, it's only fitting that it take on the original Jarvis' form. The question is: Is this just a nod to the Avengers: Endgame cameo or a confirmation that Agent Carter's two seasons did take place in the MCU after all. Considering that the Marvel Studios Television arm has now become more accepting of the former studio's creations (retroactively embracing the Netflix Marvel shows as canon via Disney Plus revival Daredevil: Born Again), it's entirely possible that they are slowly doing the same with the ABC Marvel shows, too.

We'll find out when VisionQuest makes its presence felt on our screens this fall. Either way, it's darn good to see James D'Arcy back as Mr. Jarvis once again!

VisionQuest arrives on Disney Plus on October 14, 2026.
