Marvel confirms hit show won't be coming back for season 2 in 2025

While there are some amazing Marvel shows coming in 2025, one breakout hit of 2024 won't be coming back in the new year.

After a relatively conservative round of announcements at San Diego Comic-Con, D23, and New York Comic Con regarding upcoming Marvel Studios releases, no one anticipated that the biggest wave of announcements would come in the form of a Disney+ promo dropped just before midnight on the streaming platform.

In the 60-second spot, Marvel confirmed the release dates and windows for over half a dozen live-action and animated Marvel Studios titles set to come within the final two months of 2024 and across 2025.

The list for 2025 included highly anticipated live-action shows such as Daredevil: Born Again, Ironheart, and Wonder Man, as well as a handful of animated originals that have been long in the works.

There were a lot of amazing shows confirmed to be coming to Disney+ in 2025, but there was one notable hit series missing from the promo — an omission that seems to hint that the show won’t be coming back until 2026.

X-Men ‘97 season 2 unlikely to arrive in 2025

While Marvel Studios has not officially ruled out a 2025 release date for X-Men ‘97, the studio all but confirmed the show will not be back in 2025 when it opted not to include season 2 in the upcoming release schedule teased via a coming soon promo that dropped on Disney+ on Oct. 29.

The promo was used to promote and tease the handful of projects coming in the final months of 2024 and making their way to Disney+ in 2025. Given how much Marvel Studios announced in the promo there is no reason not to include X-Men ‘97 season 2 unless the show will not be returning and that seems to be the case.

Disappointing as that might be, it’s not entirely shocking for a few key reasons.

First, Marvel’s 2025 Disney+ slate is overwhelmingly packed at the moment with six shows confirmed for 2025 including three animated projects with Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man, Eyes of Wakanda, and Marvel Zombies.

We also know that X-Men ‘97 was one of the many shows impacted by the 2023 actors’ and writers’ strikes that brought Hollywood to its knees. With work on season 2 paused for several months during the strikes, production on the season was delayed and it seems that delay is going to result in the show’s next season not being ready to roll out until 2026 at the earliest.

In fact, there have been a few rumors that the show was undergoing some creative re-writes as well which would result in a long break between seasons. Originally, the hope was the rumors were nothing more than rumors but with the show not included in the 2025 Marvel promo, it appears we will indeed have to wait until 2026 to see what is next for the X-Men

The good news is that another season is in the works and Marvel is reportedly working on season 3 as well which should help potentially prevent a larger gap between seasons moving forward. It’s also been teased that we’ll get to see Storm in an upcoming episode of What If, which would mark the first time an X-Men character appears in the animated MCU franchise.

So while we might have to wait for season 2 of X-Men ‘97, at least there will be plenty of things to keep X-Men fans busy in the months ahead!
