It's been a long time coming but we are just months away from another Avengers movie. It's a sentence we haven't been able to say since 2019's Infinity Saga-closer Avengers: Endgame arrived in movie theaters and now we get to say it all over again. Avengers: Doomsday will mark the opening salvo in the conclusion of the Multiverse Saga, with Earth's Mightiest Heroes reuniting to battle Robert Downey Jr.'s Doctor Doom.
But the heroic line-up looks a lot different to how it did in 2019, with heroes from Phases Four, Five, and Six now populating much of the Avengers team. From the likes of Shang-Chi and Shuri's Black Panther to the Thunderbolts and Fantastic Four (to Marvel Cinematic Universe mainstays like Thor and Sam Wilson's Captain America), there are a lot of heroes to contend with. And that might even mean that some major scenes get cut from the finished product.
Sentry's role in Avengers: Doomsday reportedly cut down to one big moment
It sounds like we will be seeing a lot less of Sentry than originally planned. According to industry insider James Mack, Lewis Pullman's all-powerful hero was initially a major part of Avengers: Doomsday but the role has been trimmed down somewhat as he is now only going to "have his moments" in the final battle sequence of the movie.
As with all reports and rumors (especially when it comes to a Marvel Studios movie), it's important to take this one with a grain of salt until otherwise confirmed by the MCU movie itself, but it's hard to argue that fans wouldn't be disappointed to hear this. The Sentry is one of the most powerful superheroes in both Marvel Comics and the MCU, with the latter franchise barely scratching the surface of what he is capable of. It goes without saying that Avengers: Doomsday was supposed to really explore that.
Pullman first portrayed the role of Bob, a.k.a. Sentry in 2025's critically-acclaimed Thunderbolts*. The film explored the character's mental health struggles and how the constant feeling of not being good enough drove him to want to be better, all while contending with the dark voices inside of his mind that told him he wasn't good enough. And when he underwent the experiment that created the Sentry within him, his dark side also received those powers - creating the entity known as The Void.
When The Void attacked New York City, the Thunderbolts stepped in and saved him, with Yelena Belova reaching him on an emotional level and telling him that he wasn't alone. As the Thunderbolts were crowned the New Avengers by Contessa Valentina Allegra de Fontaine, the team decided to be there for Bob so that they could always reach him if he was having a bad day. Therefore, the Sentry can't come out in case the Void does too - this is something that we were explicitly told in the Thunderbolts* post-credits scene, which directly sets up the events of Avengers: Doomsday (and was even filmed on the set of that movie).
Taking that into account, it's fair to assume that Marvel fans were expecting Bob's evolution into Sentry once again to be one of Avengers: Doomsday's biggest moments, so the apparent decision to cut his screentime down is disappointing. We know that this is a massive ensemble movie with 26+ Marvel stars (including the returning X-Men) and the end of the Multiverse Saga to accommodate, but as Sentry will likely be one of the MCU's big heroes going forward, that feels a little underwhelming.
As for what kind of role he might have, reports have suggested that he will use his all-powerful strength to prevent an incursion from happening in the final act of the movie. This might explain why he has been absent from the battle scenes that have been present in both Avengers: Doomsday trailers thus far. If that is the case, you can rest assured that Bob making the decision to bring the Sentry back will make for one of the film's most powerful moments.
And hey, if Sentry's time is cut down in Avengers: Doomsday, there is always Avengers: Secret Wars the year after that!
