The underwhelming first look at Marvel's next villain has been revealed
If you saw the new Funko POP collection designed for Captain America: Brave New World, you may look like Red Hulk (Harrison Ford), too. That bellowing growl is not giving "Smash" in a steroid-rage way, but ridiculously angry in a "This sucks out loud" feel toward the other baddie in the film —The Leader.
Played by Tim Blake Nelson ("Looking Glass" in The Watchmen Max series), The Leader is every bit a fascinating antagonist in Captain America's world. He's a primary fixture in the life of Sam Wilson as well. He was known as Samuel Sterns until a freak chemical accident that exposed him to heavy gamma radiation (because Hulk). Then, something goes terribly wrong. Sterns' skin turns green, and his head (i.e., brain) grows exponentially.
He will capture our imagination because he looks like the love child of Brainiac and a Skrull Warrior. That notwithstanding, Sterns' heightened intellect grants him powers beyond his wildest dreams, beginning with a diabolical genius. Sterns doesn't know what's coming, but eventually, he notices his power of telepathy and telekinesis to complement his superhuman smarts.
Long story, short: The Leader eventually hooks up with General Thaddeus E. "Thunderbolt" Ross, which is why he's part of canon. We're getting ahead of ourselves there, because, well... just look at him!
The first look at Captain America: Brave New World's Leader is underwhelming
Did someone ask for "Professor Hulk" or his cracked thrift shopping crew? Who is that guy?! Funko POPs already have abnormally sized craniums, but The Leader in the bottom right of the tweet looks like he could be a cowboy from the Old West who got carsick and stayed that color.
Every Captain America or Hulk (the Edward Norton version) fan knew The Leader was coming, but the first take on a character — Marvel, DC, or any other IP — is supposed to give fans goosebumps. When you take a gander at the Funko POPs from Captain America: Brave New World, you'll notice the relatively benign, almost next-door-neighbor vibe The Leader is throwing down. And that's not the first look of the character that fans were hoping to see.
His forehead is somewhat normal. There is no slick-back widow's peak hairstyle. Even his eyebrows pointed up, giving The Leader a truly sinister look. But nope, not here. Instead, we get "Hipster Leader?" He's not going to lead us in profits, which is certain. The Leader has been in comics since December 1964, when he first appeared in Tales to Astonish No. 62.
This is a company that rarely misses. And it's not like there wasn't enough source material to make a solid Funko POP out of The Leader, but they went with the "S'up brah" version. What happened?
Someone needs to call Kevin Feige and check if he's at church. This could be an omen.
