Marvel legend may not be done in the MCU character despite retirement concerns

The fate of this MCU character remained up in the air after his solo project was canceled, but he isn't leaving the screen anytime soon. Never count the devil out.

The Marvel Cinematic Universe has recently undergone a big shift with its Disney+ division. Some projects in development, such as Nova, have been reworked into feature films, while others like the Okoye show have been straight-up canceled. Meanwhile, Marvel hasn't quite yet expanded its TV slate. Even when a new spy series called Zodiac was announced at New York Comic-Con, it came at the cost of another impactful cancellation.

Daredevil: Born Again is coming to an end, and the third season will act as the final chapter in Matt Murdock's adventure. Interestingly, this isn't the first time the Man Without Fear's fate has been up in the air. The character's solo Netflix show also came to an end sooner than expected, and nobody knew whether we would ever see him again. But while the hope back then was that the hero could eventually join the MCU, now there isn't such a clear goal in sight.

Some fans hope the Devil of Hell's Kitchen will finally have a significant role on the big screen, while others fear this will be Charlie Cox's last dance as Matt Murdock after playing the character for over a decade. Fortunately, a new report finally puts all speculation to rest, and it seems Marvel fans have plenty to look forward to.

Charlie Cox will reportedly return as Daredevil after Born Again ends

As long as there are bad guys around in the MCU, they will need a visit from the Devil. According to industry insider Alex Perez (via The Cosmic Circus), "Charlie Cox is far from done being Daredevil." Moreover, the source also revealed that there are multiple projects in the works for the Defenders once Daredevil: Born Again season 3 comes to an end.

Unfortunately, it wasn't revealed when or where we'll see these street-level heroes in the MCU again, but there are some very likely scenarios. For starters, it has been rumored for many weeks that Marvel intends to do its own version of DC's Lanterns—a mystery project featuring two iconic heroes in the lead. Luke Cage and Iron Fist will reportedly take over the spotlight in this Heroes for Hire project that won't be a conventional TV show but rather one of Marvel's Special Presentations.

A similar scenario also appears to be in store for Jessica Jones. Ever since the private investigator was announced to appear in the second season of Daredevil: Born Again, insiders have claimed that Marvel wanted her to star in her own TV series. While most of those rumors circulated around last year, they have recently resurfaced amidst the cancellation of Born Again.

Tragically, Daredevil is the only member of the Defenders whose fate isn't too clear. After all, there are no reports indicating that the hero will have another solo project, regardless of whether it is a new series or a solo movie. But on the bright side, he could show up in many different places going forward.

Matt Murdock will reportedly fight alongside Earth's Mightiest Heroes next year in Avengers: Secret Wars. From that point onwards, he could be a recurring face in other MCU crossovers, as it has been rumored that Marvel is developing a street-level team-up project featuring the likes of Punisher, Jessica Jones, Spider-Man, and, of course, the Man Without Fear. Speaking of the devil (quite literally), fans have been asking for years now to see him share the screen with Spider-Man alone, so maybe Sony and Marvel will work their magic to make it happen.

There are plenty of unresolved questions about the wider MCU and the fate of many of its characters. Audiences don't know whether Moon Knight will ever return, while even Marvel itself isn't quite sure what to do with Blade. Even Tom Holland's Spider-Man doesn't have a confirmed appearance as of yet, even if reports suggest he will sit out the events of Avengers: Doomsday and return in Secret Wars.

A lot of uncertainty stems from the fact that Marvel is gearing up to close out the Multiverse Saga with its upcoming Avengers movies, and the studio doesn't quite want to spoil what will happen next. Greenlighting a Daredevil, Moon Knight, or Spider-Man project now and announcing it to the world would basically confirm that these characters will survive the collapse of the multiverse. However, it shouldn't be long before Marvel finally unveils the slate of its next phase, and with a bit of luck, we'll finally know what the future holds for Matt Murdock there.

Daredevil: Born Again season 3 will be released in 2027.
