Marvel officially confirms MCU legend's return from the dead in new first look

Anything can happen in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. We've talked about it at length before. The Marvel Studios franchise can bend the laws of reality to do the impossible, and it further pushed those boundaries with its Multiverse Saga - that can make that MCU magic happen across many separate universes. So when it comes to bringing fan-favorite characters back from the dead, that doesn't seem all that far-fetched.

We've seen it happen multiple times already across the franchise, but it's also been a part of the Multiverse aga as we met variants, doppelgangers, and lookalikes. The biggest variant is yet to come in this year's Avengers: Doomsday, as Robert Downey Jr. brings Tony Stark's face back for the new role of villain Doctor Doom. But he won't be the only returnee this year, as another highly-anticipated 2026 MCU project will feature a major return - and yes, it brings back the original star, too.

VisionQuest Funko Pops unveil first look at Ultron's return

Marvel Studios' VisionQuest is nearly upon us. The highly-anticipated Disney Plus series is the final installment in the WandaVision trilogy, coming after critically-acclaimed entries WandaVision and Agatha All Along. It will focus on Paul Bettany's Vision - or, well, White Vision - who has all of his memories and none of the emotions attached to them. To recalibrate who he is and figure out his place in the world, he will run into an old friend... or, well, enemy. We are talking, of course, about Ultron.

Now, Marvel has unveiled the first look at the character's return in the form of the official VisionQuest Funko Pops. See for yourself here:

Like with Agatha and Daredevil: Born Again, it appears that Marvel is going smaller on the Disney Plus Funko Pops, ensuring that they have picked too extremely eye-catching designs. In this case, we have Vision himself, half-human and half-robotic, seemingly a nod to the fact that he will be caught between two worlds throughout the series - and also a nod the iconic WandaVision poster in which we saw a similar split design for both Vision and Wanda Maximoff.

Of course, as we pointed out above, there is also a first look at Ultron's return - with his Funko Pop featuring a similar split design, showcasing the character in both human form and his iconic look we all recognize from the MCU's past. The big story here, however, is that it offers up a first look at the villain's human form.

James Spader is set to reprise his role as Ultron in VisionQuest - a role he first played in 2015's Avengers: Age of Ultron. The main villain of the movie, Ultron was always a robotic creation who deemed humanity the greatest threat to planet Earth. It was up to the Avengers to stop him from enacting his plan of using a more human-like synthetic body to carry out his desire to eradicate all human life. Earth's Mightiest Heroes then managed to create a new hero using J.A.R.V.I.S., leading to the birth of Vision.

As you can see from the Funko Pop, VisionQuest will bring the character back in human form. Ultron never had a human form, so this very much leans into the idea that much of this story will be taking place in Vision's head. It not only adds to the fantastical elements of the WandaVision trilogy, it builds upon that - allowing supernatural, unreal environments to come to life before our eyes (just as Westview and the Witches' Road did in both previous titles). It also explains why Ultron is "alive" in this particular project despite the fact that he was killed by the Scarlet Witch and Vision in the closing moments of Age of Ultron.

But, as we already know, VisionQuest will feature quite the star-studded cast, bringing back some of the most beloved AI characters from Iron Man and the MCU's past (albeit in human form), while also reportedly featuring some other beloved familiar faces. Orla Brady is expected to appear as the human manifestation of Tony Stark's final AI F.R.I.D.A.Y. while Emily Hampshire will do the same for E.D.I.T.H. - the AI that Tony left to protect Peter Parker (a.k.a. Spider-Man). James D'Arcy, who portrayed Mr. Jarvis in Agent Carter and Avengers: Endgame, will now portray the human version of J.A.R.V.I.S. here too (which makes sense as Paul Bettany will be busy playing Vision).

The series will also wrap up the WandaVision arc as Vision will seemingly reunite with his son Tommy Maximoff (a.k.a. Speed), portrayed by Ruaridh Mollica. Rumor has it that Agatha All Along stars Joe Locke, who portrays Tommy's twin brother Billy, and Kathryn Hahn, Agatha Harkness herself, will also appear. Some even suggest that the spinoff might bring the Scarlet Witch herself, Wanda Maximoff, back from the dead ahead of Avengers: Doomsday.

We'll have to wait and see what surprises VisionQuest has in store, but it's certainly going to be great seeing Spader back as Ultron one more time. A human version will undoubtedly be a jarring sight, but a captivating one at that!

VisionQuest arrives on Disney Plus on October 14.
