Fans of the Marvel Cinematic Universe have been eagerly anticipating the upcoming Avengers movies that will serve as a culmination to the franchise's current chapter. The Multiverse Saga has been the focus of the MCU since its debut in 2021 and it has proceeded to offer fans surprises and cameos, and hints and teases about what's to come from the "endgame" of the storyline. It has also made Marvel history by telling that saga's story across film and television, through the arrival of the various Disney Plus shows.
The Multiverse Saga has been setting the wheels in motion for Doctor Doom's arrival as he will pose a threat so great that it will be up to the disbanded Avengers to reunite to take him down. And even though that team will likely consist of a number of new faces (after multiple original and long-time Avengers died during the long-term showdown with Thanos), there are expected to be a number of returning faces too.
Fresh off the announcements that multiple original MCU stars would be reprising their roles in Avengers: Doomsday, a new report claims that another Marvel hero will appear too, negating those rumors that she wouldn't be back.
Captain Marvel will reportedly appear in Avengers: Doomsday
According to prolific Marvel scooper account Marvel Updates, Brie Larson has joined the cast of Avengers: Doomsday and will reprise her role as Carol Danvers, a.k.a. Captain Marvel. If this turns out to be the case, it wouldn't exactly be surprising given that she is one of the most powerful Avengers in the MCU, and the heroes are going to need all of the heavy-hitters that they can get in their battle against Doctor Doom (it's only the fate of the multiverse on the line, after all!).
Captain Marvel made her debut in the MCU in her self-titled movie in 2019 and she went on to become an important part of the long-term plan to take down Thanos, saving Tony Stark's life after the events of Avengers: Infinity War, bringing the Avengers' reach into the galaxy during those darker five years, and destroying Thanos' ship in the final battle. Larson then reprised her role in multiple projects in the Multiverse Saga: Shang-Chi And The Legend of the Ten Rings, Ms. Marvel, and The Marvels.
Released in 2023, The Marvels is a sequel to Captain Marvel but it unfortunately couldn't find the same levels of success that carried the 2019 film to record-breaking box office returns. It became the only MCU movie to outright flop at the box office and unfortunately resulted in a planned third Captain Marvel movie being quietly cancelled, according to reports. And that threw the fate of the character into question, with concerns that we might not see Carol Danvers light up our screens again. Particularly as her co-star, Teyonah Parris, is unsure of whether her character Monica Rambeau will return.
There were a number of rumors that claimed Captain Marvel's time in the franchise may be at an end, which is why it's refreshing to see reports such as the one above now supporting the original train-of-thought that Danvers will indeed return in the upcoming Avengers sequel. That return makes sense too, for one of the character's most recent appearances involved advising Wong about the Ten Rings, alongside Mark Ruffalo's Hulk. Given that Wong is now expected to play a major part in uniting the new team of Avengers for the Multiverse Saga's major showdown, it wouldn't be surprising if Captain Marvel was drafted in considering she has clearly kept in contact with him.
The Marvels' underperformance was certainly unfortunate, but it shouldn't rob us of the chance to see the likes of Carol Danvers, Monica Rambeau, and Kamala Khan on our screens again. This update is a promising sign that this won't be the case.
Avengers: Doomsday will be released in movie theaters on May 1, 2026.
