Eyes of Wakanda is the third animated series that is technically a part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The first was Marvel’s What If…?, which lasted for three diverting, energetic seasons. Then, at the beginning of this year, Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man brought more multiversal mayhem to the streaming service, centered on everyone’s favorite web-slinger. X-Men '97 is also produced by the animation studio, but that is a follow-up to the 1990s cartoon, and is not overtly connected to the MCU.

Eyes of Wakanda is precisely placed in the same franchise, and even the same timeline, only set hundreds of years in the past. The brief animated season is developed by the celebrated filmmaker behind Black Panther and Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, Ryan Coogler. The director recently helped spotlight a supporting character from his movie, by serving as one of the producers on the Disney Plus series Ironheart.

Eyes of Wakanda does not refer to Black Panther in its title because the tales focus on supplemental heroes from the African nation. A few other distinctions separate the show from typical MCU series. Eyes of Wakanda only consists of four chapters, making it shorter than any other animated season. Even the concise live-action Echo, as well as CGI-crafted I Am Groot had five episodes in a single run. Another peculiar aspect surrounding Eyes of Wakanda’s release is the schedule changes.

When the show was first announced in late 2023/early 2024, it was expected to come out later in 2024. By the time fans finally received a release date, Eyes of Wakanda was officially set for August 6, 2025. For most of the year, Marvel had that date secure for Ryan Coogler’s animated Wakandan vision. A few months ago, something shifted without much clarification or publicity – Eyes of Wakanda was listed for an August 27, 2025 release.

Surprisingly, and seemingly out of nowhere, Marvel and Disney pushed up the release to August 1, 2025. The unexpected change occurred less than a week before Eyes of Wakanda would make its way onto Disney Plus. There was very little marketing devoted to the show and only industry publications reported the expedited delivery.

Whether or not the constant shuffling speaks to a larger uncertainty about Marvel’s expectations for Eyes of Wakanda’s success is unclear. That could potentially play into the decision to green light a second season. For now, though, Marvel Cinematic Universe enthusiasts can currently enjoy the entirety of the four-part Eyes of Wakanda on the streaming service.
