The death of Thor has been a long time coming. It was prophesied in Donny Cates’ Thor thanks to the Black Winter. However, this possible future showed him lying helpless as Thanos smiles with a black Infinity Gauntlet and Mjolnir with the Infinity Stone in each hand. Meanwhile, behind the Mad Titan are zombie superheroes.
In Al Ewing’s Immortal Thor, a new prophecy came. The All-Father of Asgard would die at the hands of his sibling, Loki. Issue No. 24 showed that the latter was correct, but not the end of Odinson’s tale. As Immortal Thor says in every issue, would you know more?

After Thor dies, Skurge the Executioner destroys the Black Bridge. This wouldn’t be a big deal if Loki hadn’t rebuilt the Bifrost Bridge from it. Now, as Utgard Loki put it, the two were different sides of the same coin. The bridges’ destruction cut Asgard off from Midgard. Unfortunately, the tragedy doesn’t end there for the Asgardians. Without Midgard’s connection to Asgard, the Asgardian gods were only myths. That means Thor never existed. It looks like his legacy was replaced by Beta Ray Bill. However, that isn’t the end of Odinson’s tale.
During Thor’s return to Marvel Comics (written by J.Michael Strazynski), he was found in another realm of the dead called Víðbláinn. His most recent death brought him back where he faced his shadow, the new God of Lies, and his former companion, Donald Blake. Blake, still furious for Thor his part in leaving him (read Donny Cates’ Thor: Prey for that tale), attacks the God of Thunder and blinds him. But it doesn’t end like he thought it would.
Once upon a time, Thor blinded himself during Ragnarok to gain wisdom. The result was the same this time. Thor then takes Blake’s dark hammer, slams it down, and returns to Earth. He arrives in an alley with a black eye and is greeted by a kid named Lukki (we can guess who they are). When they asked if he remembered his name, Thor said it's Sigurd Jarlson and that he’s ”Just a man.”
The Mortal Thor is Al Ewing’s next venture with the former All-Father and God of Thunder. Thor is going back to the name Sigurd Jarlson that he used as a secret identity, but he won’t be the God of Thunder. He will once again be a construction worker, without a memory of who he was. Thankfully, according to Marvel, he will still fight for what’s right. Plus, as Al Ewing said, Odinson is the only person who can “return the magic of the Gods to the Earth.”
"Thor is dead, and Sigurd Jarlson walks the earth - without power, without fame, without memory. And yet the fate of Asgard and Midgard rests on this mortal man making the journey to return the magic of the Gods to the Earth. And to get there - to even learn the nature of the quest - he's going to have to fight."
Loki is up to something, and his Utgard counterpart knows this, too. You see, Loki isn’t the god he once was. Yes, the Trickster is all about mischief and storytelling, but they’re trying to be better. The best guess is that it’s all to save the universe and make Thor a better hero, god, and All-Father. It may be the only way to prevent something catastrophic from happening. If it took the death of Thor and making him a mortal for that to happen, something universe-shattering is on its way.
