Marvel reportedly bringing back the legend we've all been waiting for
The X-Men are slowly making their way to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The beloved mutants have been a fixture of the pop-culture landscape for decades now, and over the course of the past three years, Marvel Studios has been dropping hints to suggest that they will finally make their presence felt in the MCU.
The turning point was obviously Deadpool and Wolverine, which brought back Hugh Jackman as Wolverine, but he wasn't the only X-Men cast member to appear in a recent installment from the franchise, as Patrick Stewart appeared as Professor Charles Xavier in 2022's Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.
Kevin Feige has confirmed that the era of the mutants is upon us, and Marvel are currently developing their own X-Men movie, which will likely feature a host of new, younger actors set to play new, younger versions of Marvel's Mightiest Mutants. However, a new report claims that we could see one more veteran X-Men star make a long-awaited return in a long-teased project.
Michael Fassbender rumored to return as Magneto in that potential Scarlet Witch movie
According to Marvel scooper account Marvel Spoiler, Michael Fassbender will reprise his role as Magneto in that long-awaited Scarlet Witch movie. Though not yet confirmed by Marvel Studios, the report claims that the film would bring back several mutants from the prequel X-Men movies much like how Deadpool and Wolverine featured multiple cameos from the franchise.
The rumored Scarlet Witch movie has not yet been officially acknowledged by the studio but it is one of the few things that the countless insiders and scoopers can agree on. It seems that it is happening; the only question in need of an answer right now is: When? And the answer will likely come when the titular character is resurrected in the MCU franchise.
The character has been portrayed by Elizabeth Olsen since her first appearance in 2015's Avengers: Age of Ultron but the last time we saw her, she sacrificed herself in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. Considering how recently Wanda Maximoff had just embraced her comic book destiny of becoming the Scarlet Witch, that seemed a little premature, and fans have been waiting for her return ever since. Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige recently confirmed that she will be back at some point, and multiple reports claim she will be a big part of both upcoming Avengers movies Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars. If that happens, the Scarlet Witch movie will likely be imminent.
Wanda and Magneto have quite the history in the comics. Multiple storylines and adaptations have revealed that the Master of Magnetism is the Scarlet Witch's father, and mainstream audiences have accepted this over the years too. However, some other, more recent, adaptations have revealed that they aren't actually related by blood. As we are talking about Marvel Comics here - one of the most expansive franchises ever made, full of potential universes and multiverses - it's safe to say that any one of those storylines could be adapted into the MCU if Marvel Studios wanted to make it happen.
We'll have to wait and see if Magneto actually makes his presence felt in that rumored Scarlet Witch movie. If that happens, fans will undoubtedly welcome that. While there were certainly mixed feelings about the Fox X-Men prequel movies, Fassbender's portrayal of Erik Lehnsherr is widely regarded as one of their strongest aspects, and it's safe to say that we should have seen more of him on our screens.
Is the MCU finally the place for that to happen? Perhaps, but just as anything can happen in the MCU's Multiverse, rumors can rise and fall with the snap of an Infinity Gauntlet-wearing finger. So it's best to take any rumors about the Scarlet Witch movie and Magneto's potential return with a grain of salt. But if it happens, it will be glorious.
