Marvel confirms MCU legend will return from the dead
Anything can happen in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. We've said it plenty throughout the years, but the likelihood of anything happening has increased tenfold due to the limitless possibilities of the franchise's ongoing Multiverse Saga. And we do mean limitless, for the franchise has managed to find a way to bring in characters from before its own existence, merging worlds and crossing characters over to showcase the extent of the possibilities within the universes they encounter.
One thing that the MCU has always been able to do is bring some of the biggest and most beloved Marvel characters back from the dead. From the return of Loki in recent years (due to an alternate timeline's variation escaping from his time) to the subsequent returns of all the dusted characters in Avengers: Endgame, the MCU can make all kinds of magic happen.
Speaking of magic, it sounds like the franchise could be laying the groundwork to stage one of the biggest comebacks of all time. We're not referring to the legendary Robert Downey Jr.'s return in the new role as Doctor Doom, but the return of one of the franchise's most beloved characters of the past 10 years.
Scarlet Witch return finally confirmed by Kevin Feige
Marvel Studios' President Kevin Feige has finally confirmed that Wanda Maximoff, a.k.a. the Scarlet Witch, will return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Speaking to Brazilian outlet Omelete ahead of D23 Brazil, he briefly discussed the character due to the recent references to her in WandaVision spinoff Agatha All Along, saying:
"Since [Agatha], there have been a lot of questions about Wanda on fans' minds... So all I can say is that we're excited to find out when and how the Scarlet Witch might return."
Of course, this doesn't definitively say when or where the Scarlet Witch will return, but it does appear to confirm that she will be back at some point. In doing so, it answers nearly three years of questions that fans have had as the character's fate has remained up in the air since her most recent film appearance (that being 2022's Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness).
That film took place after the events of WandaVision and saw Wanda corrupted by the power of the Darkhold, as she used it in a bid to find alternate versions of her children Billy and Tommy Maximoff. She figured out that the way to doing that was through America Chavez's multiverse-hopping abilities and decided that she had to kill her to take her power. Eventually, she realized what she had become and brought down Mount Wundagore on herself, destroying all copies of the Darkhold (and seemingly herself in the process).
For a while there, it seemed as if Marvel was committed to the narrative that she had died in her sacrifice, but there were always hints that she didn't. Right as the mountain collapsed on her, a red plume of smoke appeared (suggesting that she had teleported out of there) and Strange couldn't find any trace of her afterwards. Yes, the story wanted us to believe that she was gone, but fans couldn't shake the feeling of there being a possibility of a return at some point. After all, why would the Multiverse Saga invest so much in Wanda becoming the Scalret Witch only to kill her off so suddenly.
Agatha All Along revived the discussions about Wanda's fate, and not just because it was a WandaVision spinoff. The show led fans to believe that the death was final as Wanda's "body" appeared to her old nemesis Agatha Harkness in Westview, but that was later revealed to be a figment of her own imagination. Adding fuel to the fire, the character of Teen (played by Joe Locke) was subsequently revealed to be Billy Maximoff, the son of the Scarlet Witch.
Yes, one of the sons that Wanda believed were dead after she took down the Hex in WandaVision. Moreover, Agatha also confirmed that his brother Tommy is also out there, with rumors of a sequel series set to focus on Billy and Agatha finding him. We also can't forget that Vision Quest, starring Paul Bettany as Vision once again, is on the horizon, and there are rumors that Elizabeth Olsen will make a cameo appearance as Wanda in that one. Could that be the beginning of her comeback?
The scope for Wanda's return to the MCU is endless, as are the possibilities as to how it could happen in the saga. We're just happy that the question is no longer "if it happens" but simply "when".
