If we were living in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, we would have already seen a headline from the Daily Bugle reading along the lines of "He's back. Masked menace returns!" It took nearly five years for the so-called menace to swing onto the big screen after his last appearance in Spider-Man: No Way Home, but the wait proved to be worth it. Spider-Man: Brand New Day was met with overwhelming levels of critical success, and it's also on track to become the second-highest-grossing superhero movie of all time.
The future seems bright for Peter Parker. After all, his latest solo adventure ended with the words "Spider-Man will return." Additionally, it's very likely that both Sony and Marvel Studios will greenlight a fifth installment in his saga, seeing as Spider-Man: Brand New Day will surpass $2 billion at the worldwide box office.
Fans were hoping it wouldn't take five years for the wall-crawler to be back in action this time around, and while nothing is set in stone yet, it unfortunately seems we have a long wait ahead of us once more.
Spider-Man 5 may be a long way off as director Destin Daniel Cretton gears up to film Naruto
The world is eager for Destin Daniel Cretton to direct more movies starring the wall-crawler after his spectacular work with Spider-Man: Brand New Day. Even Cretton himself seemed to suggest that he'll be back for a sequel during an interview with Deadline:
"Knowing there will be another movie, that conversation will continue in the writers' room as we figure out — if we figure out — what we're going to do next."
However, it may take some time for the acclaimed director to have a clear schedule once more. Cretton is now set to direct a live-action Naruto film, with entertainment outlet The Hollywood Reporter revealing that production is scheduled to start in the first half of 2027.
Production for Spider-Man: Brand New Day began on Aug. 1, 2025, in Glasgow, Scotland, and the movie was released almost exactly a year later on Jul. 31, 2026. If we assume a similar scenario is in store for Naruto, then the earliest Cretton would be free to start working on Spider-Man 5 would be in the first half of 2028. Even then, the wall-crawler's next movie wouldn't hit theaters until 2029 at the earliest. That's assuming that Cretton won't work on a sequel to Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings first.
Disney CEO Bob Iger stated that the MCU will not release more than three movies and two shows per year to prioritize quality over quantity. 2028 is already fully booked with projects like the upcoming X-Men movie helmed by Thunderbolts* director Jake Schreier, Shawn Levy's Ghost Rider, and Ryan Coogler's Black Panther 3, which has secured a release date of Dec. 15, 2028.
Knowing that 2028 is extremely unlikely to house another MCU movie, it isn't far-fetched to assume that Spider-Man 5 will come our way either in the second half of 2029 or, more likely, in 2030. Fortunately, not everything is grim.
Reports indicate Tobey Maguire's Spider-Man will appear on the big screen this year in Avengers: Doomsday, while Tom Holland's iteration of the character will be back next year in Avengers: Secret Wars. Furthermore, Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse will (finally) be released in 2027 as well. That means 2028 would be the only year without a major Spider-Man appearance in the MCU... unless he were to have a cameo in X-Men, seeing as he and Jean Grey are friends now.
These projects can make the wait feel shorter while we look forward to Spider-Man 5. Besides, if Spider-Man: Brand New Day has taught us anything, it's that it's better for Marvel to take its time when crafting its movies.
