It's Spider-Man's world and we're just living in it. That's very much been the vibe since Spider-Man: Brand New Day opened in theaters and took the world by storm, setting records and even eclipsing the domestic box office opening weekend of Avengers: Endgame. Yes, the Marvel Cinematic Universe movie now officially holds the record for the biggest US opening weekend ever, bringing in an incredible $360 million domestically (for a worldwide total of $932 million). Yeah, Spider-Man's world.
Needless to say, a sequel isn't in question after those numbers, nor did we ever think it would be considering that Brand New Day is highly likely looking like the first installment of a new trilogy from Sony Pictures and Marvel Studios. And yet, the mystery surrounding the next step of the franchise has always been present, particularly because Marvel Studios is prepping to conclude the Multiverse Saga and launch the next one.
Now, we have our first official update, as the star of the movie himself, Tom Holland, has offered up a sneak peek at what those next steps might be.
Tom Holland on 'unclear' but ' bright' Spider-Man 5 plans
Spider-Man: Brand New Day star Tom Holland has shed some light on the status of a potential fifth Spider-Man movie. Speaking with Serieously, alongside Zendaya, the star discussed Sony and Marvel's plans for the future of the Spidey franchise, offering up a typically mysterious Marvel answer - albeit a very hopeful one, as he said:
"What is on the cards is a little unclear right now, but I'm sure that, whatever happens with Spider-Man, it'll be very bright and lovely."
Zendaya then added: "It'll be great no matter what. We'll be sure of it." And that seemingly does confirm that the pair will be a part of those plans.
Spider-Man 5 is a no-brainer right now. Brand New Day was always going to be a resounding success but we're now looking at an all-time Top 5 grosser here, so the demand for Spider-Man is higher than it ever was. The fact that this film - the fourth standalone Spider-Man movie in the MCU and a relatively straightforward, linear adventure - is gearing up to outgross 2021's crossover event Spider-Man: No Way Home is a testament to the enduring popularity of the webslinger, Marvel and Sony, and everyone involved in the production.
So, yes, at some point down the line Spider-Man 5 will be happening, even if Sony Pictures and Marvel Studios has yet to officially announce it. And, if we're being truly honest, there is likely a real, tangible reason as to why it won't be announced for some time to come. The reason? Spider-Man himself, and his involvement in other movies.
There is a lot of speculation as to whether Tom Holland will reprise his role as the webslinger in Avengers: Doomsday (and, if not, then why). Although Marvel Studios has not yet confirmed Spidey among its star-studded cast, which has led to discussion about what the webslinger could be up to and how any potential absence from a multiverse-shattering event could be explained. And, well, the Spider-Man: Brand New Day post-credits scene might have the answers to that conundrum. If that is truly the case, then it could be some time before Spider-Man 5 comes out (because that would mean that Brand New Day was setting up the next two Avengers movies and not its own sequel).
If Spider-Man is truly off-world (as the Spidey Tracker in that post-credits scene implies), then Doomsday is likely the reason for that. Has he been taken to Battleworld by Doctor Doom after the implosion of the multiverse (as part of the Multiverse Saga's conclusion) or is Loki recruiting major heroes behind-the-scenes to prevent Doom from achieving his ultimate goals?
Regardless of whether Holland makes an appearance in the next Avengers movie, he is heavily rumored to return in 2027's Avengers: Secret Wars - which we know will take place before any potential Spider-Man 5 as it's the only confirmed MCU movie coming out next year. And that could feature the resolution to that post-credits scene.
An early confirmation of a fifth Spidey movie would run the risk of spoiling Avengers: Doomsday and / or Avengers: Secret Wars, so it might be sometime until the official announcement is made. Nevertheless, it's clear that all involved know that there is a plan to make more of these movies. Sony Pictures' Amy Pascal confirmed their desire to make more Spider-Man movies with Tom Holland already, so it's really only a matter of time. The box office dominance has just confirmed that.
