Spider-Mania is alive and well. The Friendly Neighborhood webslinger returned to movie theaters for his fourth standalone film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe and very quickly reminded people why he remains one of the most popular superheroes in comic book, movie, and TV history. Spider-Man: Brand New Day's success at the box office saw it even eclipse Marvel counterpart Avengers: Endgame in the US, officially claiming the highest-grossing domestic opening weekend of all time.
The 38th MCU movie has already crossed $1 billion at the box office and it shows no signs of slowing down, officially proving once and for all - and once again - that Spidey remains a global phenomenon. And when he comes to streaming platforms around the world, he will likely prove that all over again.
That being said, don't be expecting to to join the rest of the MCU movies on Disney Plus. At least not yet.
Sony will ensure that Spider-Man: Brand New Day releases on Netflix first
Although Marvel Studios is heavily involved in the Spider-Man movies (hence their placement in the MCU), the films ultimately belong to Sony Pictures - who own the movie rights to the Spider-Man characters. As a result of that, use of the character in the MCU franchise is somewhat more complicated than it would be for other Marvel Comics characters, but the good news is that both studios are fully aligned on where they want Spidey to be.
That doesn't completely translate to streaming as of yet, as Sony has a deal in place with Netflix that allows its new releases to go straight to that platform as part of what it calls a Pay-1 window. It means that, around early 2027, Spider-Man: Brand New Day will make its streaming debut on Netflix (whereas the rest of the Marvel Studios movies would usually go to Disney Plus around 100 days after their theatrical releases). The good news is that it will eventually find its way to its fellow MCU movies.
Sony also has a deal in place with Disney that allows its movies to eventually make their way to Disney Plus in the US around 24 months after its theatrical release - the Pay-2 window, if you will. With that in mind, we can probably expect Spider-Man: Brand New Day to be released on Disney Plus sometime in 2028. Yes, it seems like a long way off, but there will be other ways to watch it before then, including on PVOD digital platforms, home media and, of course, Netflix, which gets first dibs due to Sony's existing deal with the platform.
Needless to say, Spider-Man: Brand New Day will be one of the most sought-after releases whenever it does become streaming-eligible, which makes Netflix the place to be this fall (with an anticipated Thanksgiving 2028 release date expected). The film is on course to become one of the most successful of all-time, with its opening weekend gross being the second all-time worldwide (and No. 1 in the US). It has also joined Avengers: Endgame in becoming the second-fastest movie to cross the $1 billion mark, having done so in just three days.
So, whether you have ventured out to the cinema to see Spidey swing his way back into your hearts, plan on rewatching sometime in the coming weeks, or simply plan on waiting for Spider-Man: Brand New Day to arrive on streaming platforms, you can rest assured that the wall-crawler's newest adventure will continue to make an impression - both on us and everyone else - regardless of which platform it does it on.
