Marvel Studios and Sony Pictures' collaboration on the Spider-Man franchise continues to produce results. This summer's Spider-Man: Brand New Day has produced the best of them, as the 38th Marvel Cinematic Universe movie exceeded any and all expectations in its opening weekend, setting an opening day record in the US, and shattering all kinds of records since then too.
The fourth solo offering from the webslinger has ascended to heights that we didn't even imagine (despite the fact that we imagined the highest of heights), which is a testament to all involved. That, of course, includes the wall-crawler himself, as Tom Holland has done the unthinkable in the process.
Spider-Man: Brand New Day might have made history this weekend, but it's the second-biggest history-maker behind Tom Holland himself.
Tom Holland stars in the four highest worldwide box office openings of all time
Spider-Man: Brand New Day stunned moviegoers through the weekend but it may have stunned box office analysts even more, coming in well above projections to gross an incredible $927 million worldwide. $355 million of that comes from the domestic audiences, while the other $527 million came from international markets. And, together, it carried the movie to the second-highest opening weekend of all time, sitting just behind Avengers: Endgame's $1.2 billion.
Notice something about those two movies? Yes, they are both Marvel Cinematic Universe movies (with involvement from Marvel Studios, of course), but they also happen to both feature Tom Holland as Spider-Man. But it gets even better than that, as Holland now stars in the four movies with the highest-grossing worldwide opening weekends of all time. And yes, they are all as our friendly neighbourhood Spider-Man.
To put that in perspective, here are the highest-grossing opening weekends of all time at the worldwide box office to give you an idea of the sheer dominance of the four MCU movies that feature Tom Holland's Spidey:
- Avengers: Endgame (2019) - $1.2 billion
- Spider-Man: Brand New Day (2026) - $927 million
- Avengers: Infinity War (2018) - $640 million
- Spider-Man: No Way Home (2021) - $600 million

Yep, Holland has really made a name for himself as the MCU's webslinger, swinging all the way to the top of the box office charts. What's even more incredible is that the three other Marvel movies that accompany Spider-Man: Brand New Day in that Top 4 are also in the Top 8 highest-grossing movies of all time, so it's safe to say that the newest addition is currently on-course to joining them (perhaps even aiming for Top 5 if it sustains the momentum).
It's unclear right now as to whether Peter Parker will return in the upcoming Avengers: Doomsday. Holland's name is not part of the official cast list, but then again neither were Evans or Hayley Atwell before Marvel Studios officially confirmed that they would appear in the film. We know that Spider-Man will return in another installment, but the title in which that will happen is not yet clear. 2026's Avengers: Doomsday, 2027's Avengers: Secret Wars, and the inevitable Spider-Man 5 are all potential opportunities.
But if Holland does reprise his role as the wall-crawler in Avengers: Doomsday, you can rest assured that his name will appear on that list for a fifth time. Although it's not yet clear how much the upcoming Avengers movie will make compared to the previous ones (which released at the height of the Infinity Saga), the impending conclusion of the Multiverse Saga, Robert Downey Jr., Chris Evans, and Chris Hemsworth's returns, as well as the star-studded cast are sure to bring it close to the $2 billion mark regardless. Taking that into account, an opening weekend record-setter is entirely possible.
Spider-Man: Brand New Day proved many things: For starters, the MCU is not dead and superhero fatigue is not just some general blanket event; Spider-Man is proof that both Marvel Studios and superheroes still have life. It also highlights what a Hollywood Heavyweight Tom Holland has turned into. The star, who also appears in Christopher Nolan's The Odyssey (along with Spider-Man: Brand New Day co-stars Zendaya and Jon Bernthal) made further history by having both of his films drive an incredible $1 billion to the worldwide box office in one weekend. Holland, Zendaya, and Bernthal have had a heck of a weekend, as has the box office itself; the real winners, however, are us as moviegoers.
