The Marvel Cinematic Universe has been gearing up for a big comeback in every sense of the word. After a period of releasing multiple underwhelming projects one after another, the superhero giant has changed its strategy and is now instead focusing on quality over quantity, with Thunderbolts* being one of the first examples. Furthermore, characters who were absent from the big or small screen for many years are now at the center of their own projects, as is the case with Daredevil and the Fantastic Four. But if that wasn't enough, audiences will also witness huge superhero comebacks in Avengers: Doomsday.
Earth's Mightiest Heroes' upcoming adventure will feature 27 characters at the very least — all of which have already been officially announced. However, President of Marvel Studios Kevin Feige has confirmed that there is room for even more heroes to make an appearance. Fans have been speculating left and right who else will join the fight against Doom, with some likely candidates being Star-Lord and Captain Marvel. However, some unlikely comebacks might've been spoiled ahead of the movie's release, all thanks to Captain America himself.
Anthony Mackie teases the return of the original MCU cast in Avengers: Doomsday
When talking about the MCU Avengers, it wouldn't be unusual for the "big six" to come to mind. You know, the original members who stopped Loki from invading Earth back in 2012. Iron Man, Captain America, Hulk, Black Widow, Hawkeye, and Thor made history by being the stars of the first big superhero crossover on the big screen. Unfortunately, three of them are officially out of the picture, and only the God of Thunder and Robert Downey Jr's Victor Von Doom are confirmed to appear in Avengers: Doomsday. However, that doesn't mean Marvel isn't planning to reunite them all soon, much to audiences' surprise.
During an interview with Total Film, Anthony Mackie was asked what he's most excited about in the upcoming Avengers movie. The Captain America: Brave New World star mentioned that he likes the idea of the "original cast, members of the MCU" meeting all the new blood that has been at the center of the spotlight in recent years. Danny Ramirez, known for portraying the role of Falcon, quickly panicked and tried to stop any surprises from being spoiled. Ultimately, the two laughed about the whole situation, with Mackie implying that he was talking about Robert Downey Jr's return from the very beginning.
It might be a bit strange to indicate that the original cast of the Avengers is coming back, just because two out of six stars are returning. With that in mind, we need to ask the question: Is it possible for audiences to see Chris Evans, Scarlett Johansson, Mark Ruffalo, and Jeremy Renner in Doomsday? Well, that seems to be the case if rumors are to be believed.
Recently, it was reported that The Hulk will indeed make an appearance in the highly anticipated crossover. Furthermore, Deadline confirmed that Chris Evans is also a part of the movie's cast, even though he was quick to deny it afterwards. Additionally, renowned and reliable superhero insider Alex Perez hinted that Scarlett will be back, except not as Black Widow (everything's possible in the multiverse). Lastly, Jeremy Renner teased last year that he's "probably" going to show up to the party as well.
Avengers: Doomsday is likely to feature the six original Avengers, even if it's not in their original roles. But regardless of what characters they are playing this time around, it will be a nice callback to the origins of the MCU. Besides, it will be interesting to see how characters like Thor interact with new heroes such as the Fantastic Four or the X-Men. On the bright side, it isn't long before we watch it for ourselves.
Avengers: Doomsday will be released on May 1, 2026.
