Marvel officially delays highly-anticipated 2026 release to next year

There were very few Marvel projects standing between us and the release of Avengers: Doomsday, and now the list has officially become shorter.

Tony Stark once said that "part of the journey is the end," and that phrase is very fitting for the current stage of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The culmination of the Multiverse Saga is rapidly approaching, and Avengers: Doomsday is set to act as the opening act of a final chapter that has been eight years in the making.

Now that Spider-Man: Brand New Day has come and gone, only two MCU projects were supposed to separate us from watching Earth's Mightiest Heroes assemble on the big screen one more time. But in an unexpected turn of events, that list just got a little shorter.

Disney took the world by storm at D23, announcing breaking news about highly anticipated projects for both the big and small screens. Fans were eager to discover whether there would be any release announcements for upcoming Disney+ shows, and while that was exactly the case, it also came with the downside of learning that the friendly neighborhood hero won't grace TV screens this year as originally intended.

Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man has been delayed to January 2027

Peter Parker has a bit of a reputation for arriving late to any appointment because of his superhero life, and history has just repeated itself. During D23 2026, it was officially announced that the second season of Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man will be released in January 2027, despite being originally slated for release in Fall 2026.

Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man was originally envisioned as a series with yearly releases, much like Daredevil: Born Again. However, Head of Streaming, Television, and Animation at Marvel Studios Brad Winderbaum had previously stated in an interview with Collider that the gap between seasons 1 and 2 of the animated show would always be a little longer than usual:

"We will have a Spider-Man season every year if I have anything to say about it. What usually happens, as you know, in animation is that there's a bigger gap between season 1 and season 2 than in subsequent seasons, and that'll be similar in Friendly. We will have to wait a little bit more than a year for season 2, but then after that, it should come out on an annual cadence, hopefully."

Interestingly, during a different interview with Screen Rant, Winderbaum stated that Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man season 2 "is complete." However, there's a reason why the upcoming batch of episodes won't be released anytime soon, even if they are ready to roll:

"There's a Spider-Man [Brand New Day] feature, there's [Avengers:] Doomsday [and we] want to give it [Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man season 2] a good place to live and breathe."

2026 has already been stacked for the superhero giant, and we also have VisionQuest and Avengers: Doomsday to look forward to. However, 2027 isn't anywhere near as busy, given that there will be no major theatrical MCU releases aside from Avengers: Secret Wars. In the series department, the third seasons of Daredevil: Born Again and X-Men '97 will also be coming next year, but that's where the slate ends. As such, it makes sense to delay Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man to January, which is the same window in which Wonder Man was released this year.

Marvel didn't just announce the release date for Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man season 2 during D23, but also showcased a preview teaser. In it, we see the debut of many iconic characters such as the Lizard, the Rhino (in his suit this time), and Spider-Gwen. But perhaps the biggest revelation is that Peter Parker will get to bond with the symbiote, while entertainment outlet Deadline reports that Eddie Brock's introduction was also teased during Disney's animation panel.

2027 could be home to multiple arachnid adventures. Aside from Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man season 2, it has been reported that Tom Holland's Peter Parker will play an instrumental role in Avengers: Secret Wars, and that a Venom spin-off game from developer Insomniac will be released next year. So, all signs indicate that Spider-Man: Brand New Day was just the beginning of even bigger things to come.

Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man will be released on Disney Plus in January 2027.
