Marvel veteran will return for "a major role" in the Mutants Era
The Mutants are on their way to the Marvel Cinematic Universe and fans couldn't be more excited. With Marvel Studios obtaining the rights to the characters after the Disney / Fox merger a number of years ago, the X-Men's arrival in the MCU became an inevitability. Some fans actually felt that the franchise could have moved a bit quicker with their introduction, but the studio instead prioritized the Fantastic Four and decided to play the long game with the X-Men's introduction.
Although the Multiverse Saga has had its ups and downs, it has set the stage for the X-Men's arrival. Yes, the strategy with Marvel's Mightiest Mutants has so far paid off as it all really kicked into gear with Wolverine's arrival in Deadpool and Wolverine, with Hugh Jackman returning to the role. And with the franchise acknowledging them, it's only a matter of time until they all show up.
Kevin Feige has confirmed that the next era of the MCU will be the Mutants Era. That's exciting alone, but now a new report has suggested that a familiar MCU face will be a major part of that chapter.
Wanda Maximoff reportedly set to be a part of the Mutants' Era
According to prolific Marvel scooper account Marvel Updates, Elizabeth Olsen will continue to play the role of Wanda Maximoff after Avengers: Secret Wars as the Scarlet Witch is expected to have a major role in the Mutants Era.
This is obviously a huge deal because all you have to do is be an MCU fan to know that Wanda is one of the franchise's most popular characters. But this report, although not confirmed by any official source as of yet, does suggest that we're about to see her on our screens a lot more. If that's the case, it would be a welcome change as it has been quite some time since we have seen the Scarlet Witch in an MCU project.
Wanda played a major role in the early days of the Multiverse Saga, with WandaVision kicking it off. She then continued on into Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness where the character seemingly perished after destroying Mount Wundagore and all remnants of the Darkhold. Even with the Scarlet Witch's two-year absence, fans have been convinced that she will return someday. The fact that her own children, who she was searching for in Doctor Strange 2, have now arrived in Agatha All Along has all but confirmed that.
Kevin Feige's recent comments also suggest that she will be back in some capacity in the near-future, and reports are indicating that she will have a major role to play in both Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars. This actually supports the recent report about Wanda's potential involvement in the Mutants Era, as both of those Avengers movies are set to act as a conclusion to the Multiverse Saga - likely paving the way for the chapter that comes after it at the same time - so if the Scarlet Witch returns in those films, an increased role going forward would make sense.
It's also worth noting that Wanda has a significant connection to the mutants. In the Marvel Comics, she is Magneto's daughter (depending on the specific comics you read), and with that character expected to make his MCU debut in the Mutants Era, it wouldn't be surprising if the Scarlet Witch had a role to play in that. In fact, it would be more surprising if she didn't.
We'll have to wait and see how large a role Wanda will play in the Mutants Era, but if this confirms anything, it's just more evidence that the Scarlet Witch will return to the franchise in the near-future. And that is undoubtedly a great thing!
