It’s been a while since Disney bought Fox, and even longer since they purchased Marvel. After the acquisition, Marvel slowly released the Predator and Alien movie franchises into the comics. Both franchises have individually fought The Avengers, Captain America, and Wolverine in various miniseries. They've also had stories outside of the superpowered universe.
After years of working together (which includes the Disney+ streaming service), the two juggernaut companies are joining forces to bring a crossover that fans knew was coming. The heroes and villains of Marvel Comics will be going to a universe far, far away. That’s right, welcome to the Star Wars universe.
Entertainment Weekly broke the news that writer Kevin Smith (Clerks, Chasing Amy, and Dogma) will be joined by artist David Marquez (Uncanny X-Men and The Unchosen) for a five-part mini-series titled Star Wars/Marvel: Hope Assembles. According to the report, “Figures like Chewbacca, Han Solo, Luke Skywalker, and Princess Leia will join Earth-616—the primary continuity in which most stories of Marvel Comics take place—and mingle with the likes of Captain America, Black Widow, Spider-Man, and the Hulk. Meanwhile, Doctor Doom and the Marvel rogue’s gallery will join the likes of Darth Vader and the Galactic Empire.”
“Back in the early ‘80s, I had a subscription to Marvel’s Star Wars comics. And as fun as it was to follow the continuing adventures of Luke, Leia, and Han, I always wished that Spider-Man or Doctor Doom could cross over into their cinematic saga.” Kevin Smith said. “So when the opportunity arose to actually tell that story, nobody had to Force my hand! I’m ecstatic to be writing Hope Assembles for the 50th anniversary of Star Wars! Many thanks to Marvel Comics and Lucasfilm for trusting me to fly the Falcon and the Quinjet!”
The perfect creative team
Anyone who’s followed Kevin Smith’s career knows that he’s one of the biggest Star Wars fans on Earth. He’s made plenty of references in his projects and has also brought in classic Star Wars actors Mark Hamill and Carrie Fisher to play various guest roles. This is why there’s no doubt he’ll crush this role because he cares about the franchise.
Artist David Marquez is the perfect person to pair with Smith. Marquez always brings the fantastic and extraordinary to life with his art. If you don’t believe me, take a look at his Instagram page. It’s full of amazing pictures from mutants to magic to gods. To further prove my point, he’s drawn covers for various Star Wars comics, so he knows the characters and how to make them pop.
The only thing surprising about this news is that it’s taken so long for this crossover to happen. But the fact that this is occurring on the 50th anniversary of Star Wars: A New Hope makes sense. It’s the perfect way to celebrate one of sci-fi's greatest achievements. It also helps highlight some of the various Marvel Comics characters that will appear. Plus, who doesn’t want to see Darth Vader and Victor Von Doom team up or fight?
