The first six issues of Ultimate Wolverine followed Logan’s time as the Winter Soldier. During that time, readers witnessed him kill people he loved, like Mystique and Nightcrawler, and almost murder Gambit and Sprite (Kitty Pryde). Thanks to reprogramming by Beast and Legion, Logan’s mind was set back to normal. Now, it’s time for Wolverine and the rest of the Opposition to rescue other mutants and get revenge on the Eurasian Republic.
Following Logan getting his memory back, a team of Natasha Romonoff, Abigail Brand, Hank McCoy, Victor Creed, Gambit, Sprite, and Wolverine set off on a rescue mission. When they arrive, they see dozens of dead mutants. They continue into the building and come across an empty room with a mysterious mutant who’s repeatedly saying, “I won’t let you.”
Kitty says that she recognizes him from a file and says that his name is Warren Worthington. It goes downhill from there.

Kitty attempts to talk to Warren, but before she can calm him down, it is revealed that this Warren Worthington had already gone through the process of having his feather wings replaced by metal ones. Warren lashes out and kills Hank McCoy and Abigail Brand with his metal feathers. Thankfully, before anyone else was killed, the rest of the Opposition took him down. Logan wants Warren dead, but Kitty reminds Wolverine that Warren’s a victim just like he was.
It appears that Warren Worthington, going from Angel to Archangel, was meant to be on every earth. However, unlike what happened in Marvel’s main continuity of Earth-616, Warren became a crazed killer because the scientists who transformed him didn’t care about their experiment. They only wanted a killer. Meanwhile, Apocalypse wanted the same thing, but En Sabah Nur made sure that his newest Horseman kept some of his humanity.
Yes, what Apocalypse did was evil. However, you can see the difference in the two transformations. When Warren first made his appearance as Archangel (the transformation began in X-Factor No. 18, and he appeared in issue 24), he wasn’t babbling to himself. He was still a slave to the will of Apocalypse, but Warren wasn’t as bad off as he was in Ultimate Wolverine. He knew who he was, and "accepted" his new position.
At the end of Ultimate Wolverine No. 8, there is a report about Warren's experimentation that wasn’t sent. The lead scientist said that this project wouldn’t be successful like the Winter Soldier (Wolverine), and that Warren has already killed multiple people. And, as you can see, thanks to all of the carnage and death, they were right. That means the steps for Warren to reclaim his mind won’t be easy.
The pain and torture Warren went through may be too much for his mind to handle. Hopefully, he can recover from the torture. The heroes will need his help because the Maker is on his way back to take back his grip over the universe.
