The Marvel Cinematic Universe is a multimedia franchise full of possibility. We've seen that from the 37 movies Marvel Studios has gifted us with thus far, as well as the 12+ Disney Plus shows that have helped expand the MCU throughout its Multiverse Saga. And speaking of the Multiverse Saga, that's where the real potential for possibility has been showcased.

Although some fans might argue that it hasn't made the most of that potential thus far, the franchise's current chapter has brought back characters from previous Marvel franchises (along with their actors too) while also offering up snapshots of alternate worlds that don't play out exactly like the MCU's primary Sacred Timeline does.

Now, one of the saga's upcoming titles will explore that possibility further, taking a look at one of the worst alternate worlds in the MCU's Multiverse, and unexpectedly giving fans a first look at a crossover we never thought we'd see. That crossover comes in the form of an epic battle, because this is the MCU and the stakes are high.

New Marvel Zombies trailer features Captain Marvel and Ikaris battle

Marvel Studios has released another new teaser trailer for Marvel Zombies and, for the third time, the upcoming animated series has sent the internet into meltdown. But this time, it wasn't the violence (which is still prevalent) or the undead iteration of the Scarlet Witch (who is also very present); it was the unexpected showdown between long-standing Avenger Captain Marvel and member of the Eternals Ikaris. See it for yourself below:

Ghastly, right?! But also unbelievably epic in a way that only Marvel Zombies could be. The showdown features Carol Danvers, modelled after Brie Larson's iconic portrayal in the MCU movies, hurtling towards ikaris, modelled after Richard Madden's portrayal in Eternals, in a violent rage. If that doesn't sound like the Carol you know, that's because the character has become a zombie in this universe, suffering the same fate as the vast majority of the Avengers.

Even so, the sight of Captain Marvel, wearing the iconic helmet that she did in 2019's Captain Marvel and is commonly associated with the character through her various comic book appearances, is just too darn epic for words to describe. But Ikaris is also at least partially infected, which would explain why two zombies are fighting each other instead of joining Wanda's army.

Fans have predicted that, due to the fact that both Captain Marvel and Ikaris are among the most powerful beings in the MCU, at least one of them is attempting to fight off the virus. It could genuinely be either one of them due to their immense powers, but given that Ikaris looks, well, less zombified than Captain Marvel, he is seemingly the more likely candidate. The fact that the Eternals are synthetic might prevent them from being completely taken over by the virus.

For years, fans have wanted to see a battle between The Avengers and the Eternals. It looked like that might happen at some point in the MCU's Multiverse Saga but, after the mixed response to Eternals in 2021 (and the film's underperformance at the box office), it sounds like it will be a while before we see the live-action versions of the characters. But that's where a project like Marvel Zombies comes in handy when bringing those visions to life.

We might not get the chance to see the two super-teams collide for the foreseeable, but seeing two of their most powerful characters square off certainly adds another layer of "must-see" to the upcoming animated series. The sky is quite literally the limit with this one, and a battle between zombified Avengers and Eternals in the sky is the perfect example of that!

Marvel Zombies arrives on Disney Plus on September 24, 2025.
