Not too long ago, multiple details about Marvel's Wolverine were still a secret. Granted, the first official gameplay trailer gave us a taste of what to expect in September when the highly anticipated video game hits shelves. However, many lingering questions remained unanswered, such as: Will Insomniac's upcoming title be open-world? Do the X-Men exist in this universe? Will we get to control another hero aside from Wolverine, or perhaps get a quick Spider-Man cameo? Fortunately, we can now put all speculation to rest.

An extended gameplay trailer for Marvel's Wolverine was unveiled during PlayStation's latest State of Play. Soon after, IGN had the chance to talk to game director Mike Daly and creative director Marcus Smith about what players saw in the presentation. During the interview, many interesting tidbits about Insomniac's upcoming title were revealed, and it's time to break them all down.

Marvel's Wolverine won't have a Spider-Man crossover or extra playable characters

It had been previously confirmed that Marvel's Wolverine would take place in Earth-1048, the very same universe where Marvel's Spider-Man takes place. Given that Insomniac Games is behind the two franchises, superhero fans were awaiting some kind of crossover that could eventually lead to a proper team-up between the two heroes. But despite all the speculation, Spidey won't appear in Logan's upcoming adventure, as revealed by Marcus Smith:

"It's correct that it does take place in the 1048 Marvel Universe, which is the Insomniac video game universe. It happens in the same world, but we don't have any crossover. Spider-Man will not be making an appearance in Wolverine."

It makes sense for the two beloved Marvel heroes to have isolated journeys for the time being. After all, that's exactly how the Marvel Cinematic Universe first started: with solo projects before an eventual team-up. That being said, it wouldn't be surprising if Marvel's Wolverine ends up having a few hidden Marvel's Spider-Man Easter eggs for players to find.

Insomniac is keen on making a true, authentic Wolverine adventure, which is why the wall-crawler won't be in it. Unfortunately, it also means there won't be other playable characters aside from Logan himself, as revealed by Mike Daly:

"This game is all about Wolverine and you play Wolverine the whole way through. We wanted to keep the focus on him throughout the whole story."

Fortunately, that doesn't mean players won't get to fight alongside other iconic mutants. The extended gameplay trailer gave us a glimpse of Logan and Jean Grey working together to defeat a group of Reavers. Furthermore, Daly revealed that the two beloved Marvel characters will keep teaming up throughout the main campaign, with Jean eventually being able to aid Logan in stealth sections by "dimming enemy perceptions."

Similarly, players will also get to fight alongside Sabretooth at some point in the story, though he will have a more competitive relationship with Logan. That means they may not work very well as a team, and Sabretooth will even attempt to steal kills from the player.

Other mutants like Mystique and Leech will make an appearance, although that doesn't mean the X-Men already exist in this world. As revealed by an entry in the official PlayStation Blog, most of the world is unaware of the existence of mutants, and the few who know are hunting them down.

Logan will be part of Team X, a group dedicated to rescuing mutants captured by the Reavers. This adventure will take our titular hero on many missions across the globe, which means there won't be a large "open map" for players to explore. Instead, we'll play through linear levels set in different locations, as revealed by Daly:

"I can say we did not set out to make an open-world game or a sandbox game. What we really wanted was high octane, high intrigue, linear single-player adventure, and the missions reflect that in their structure."

Insomniac Games definitely managed to accomplish this goal, as the footage shown so far for Marvel's Wolverine is incredibly action-packed and violent. To double down on the gore, players will be able to dismember villains when filling Logan's rage meter and doing a special move. However, Insomniac Games also made sure to include an option to tone down the violence, as revealed by Daly:

"We know that [gore] is not for everyone. And because we knew this was going to be a big part of the game from the beginning, we also implemented an accessibility feature to turn off gore. It's clearly integrated into the game in a lot of different ways, and so it's a nuanced feature that is very selective about what we show, what we censor, turning off blood and things like that, just in order to make it more palatable to people who don't really want to have that part of the experience."

Last but not least, it was revealed that this version of Logan will be able to die if his heart stops. If players are taken down and their rage meter is still filled, they will be able to consume it to get a second chance. However, if Logan is wounded and he doesn't have a single bar of rage filled, it will be game over (quite literally).

With Marvel's Wolverine just around the corner, it won't be long before PlayStation and Insomniac reveal even more surprises and drop more trailers teasing what's to come. However, we now have a very clear idea of what to expect thanks to Marcus and Daly's comments. Fortunately, it won't be long before we get to experience this adventure for ourselves.

Marvel's Wolverine will be released on Sept. 15, 2026.
