Marvel's Wolverine trailer is everything a fan of Logan could want

PlayStation’s Wolverine has finally released a gameplay trailer, and it looks like it’s going to be the bloody, brutal, action-fueled game you’d expect, and more.

With all of the movies, TV shows, and video games that are being cancelled in today's day and age, it started to seem like Insomniac’s Wolverine was next on the list. It’s been years since the initial teaser teaser was released, so it’s easy to start losing faith. It didn’t help that production on both Wonder Woman and Black Panther games had been shut down in recent months. Thankfully, that's not the case, as the first gameplay trailer for the game has been released, confirming a fall 2026 release. Hopefully, if you’re a fan of Logan, the release of the trailer for PlayStation’s next Marvel game made you happy.

That trailer showed us all that everyone’s favorite hairy, clawed mutant will be as vicious and claw-happy as you’d want. Previous games like Wolverine’s Revenge failed with the Adamantium claw front for basic moves, but did well with the combos, story, and voice acting (the latter thanks to Mark Hammil voicing Logan). Meanwhile, X-Men Origins: Wolverine is an underrated game that did almost everything well. Nevertheless, this video game could be the success fans needed.

The action

First and foremost, let's talk about the action. If you’re making a game starring Wolverine, the fighting has to be bloody. Most of the games featuring Logan didn’t have the brutality you’d expect. Mostly because he wasn’t the star, or it was meant to be family-friendly. Within the first couple of seconds of the trailer for Marvel's Wolverine, you learn that this isn’t family-family.

Insomniac Games is known for its creativity with action. Ratchet and Clank's weapons are a clear example of this. However, this isn’t a platform where someone will be using a gun that turns people into sheep. Instead, enemies will be turned into julienne salads. Clearly, the creators took the need for ferocious and inventive attacks seriously. Mind you, this was only a sample. Imagine what they haven’t shown.

It looks like there were some stealth moves displayed, too - one of which involved Wolverine leaping from above and killing an unsuspecting victim, and we all know there’s more coming. PlayStation's Spider-Man has a bunch of stealth moves, and Peter Parker and Miles have a few with a no-kill rule. Logan doesn’t have that restraint. Expect some of the most insane action in video game history.

The villains

The most important thing in any action game is the antagonists. The story is important, but the villain adds to that. In the case of PlayStation's Wolverine, we’ve seen a Sentinel, Mystique (more on her later), the military, Omega Red, and what appears to be the Reavers. If the latter is true, then expect a boss battle with Donald Pierce or Lady Deathstrike. And, since the Princess Bar was shown, there should be an appearance from Viper.

With everyone I just mentioned, it’s doubtful these are the only enemies that will show up, because Logan isn’t short of people who want him dead. For example, there’s no way Victor Creed (Sabretooth) won’t make an appearance. He may not be someone who Wolverine fights in the game, but he could still be there. And, if we’re lucky, Romulus could be part of this or a future storyline (a potential Wolverine 2 or a DLC, perhaps?).

Mystique side quests

One of my favorite things about this trailer was seeing Mystique. At first, it was a little surprising until I remembered that Wolverine was created by the same company responsible for PlayStation’s Spider-Man franchise. It looks like Raven Darkholme (Mystique) will be part of the game, like Mary Jane is during stealth missions for Spider-Man. However, unlike MJ, Mystique's killing people will be more realistic, and her stealth will be more detailed.

One of the complaints people had with MJ’s scenes is that there weren't many who particularly wanted to play as Mary Jane when you have Spider-Man (Miles Morales or Peter Parker). That won’t be the case here. Who wouldn’t want to use a shapeshifting mutant with superb fighting skills? And knowing how creative things can get, we will see amazing combos and kills.

Could the X-Men be involved in a significant capacity?

We also can’t forget the plethora of people who love Logan. Could they make an appearance? It would be nice to hear that Nightcrawler plays a part in this series. Kurt is Logan's best friend and someone he’s confided in more times than anyone. A fastball special from Colossus would be cool, as would be an appearance from his kids, Laura and Daken.

And, yes, while Deadpool is a hero, if he does show up, Logan will fight him. It would be a funny twist if Wade were used as the person to learn how to play the game. He and Wolverine have a love-hate relationship, and it would be an entertaining way to learn Logan’s moves. Plus, you would get Deadpool breaking the fourth wall to discuss the game.

There’s more to come...

We still have a year before the game is released. That means, between then and now, we’ll learn plenty, for instance, more of the story. Logan’s mission will no doubt make its way around the internet at some point via the various teases, interviews or gameplay that comes in the year ahead. If Logan is at the Princess Bar in Madripoor and the Canadian wilderness, does that mean Wolverine will have a special way to travel via Blink or a Krakoan gate? And since this is in the same universe as PlayStation's Spider-Man, will there be nods to the characters or a connection to them?

These are only some of the things fans will discover over the next year. Stay tuned to Bam Smack Pow to find out what’s next for the best there is at what he does.
