For decades, superhero fans have witnessed multiple Marvel Cinematic Universe crossovers play out on the big screen, starring heroes from every corner of the multiverse. Unfortunately, the X-Men were never able to join the party and save the day alongside the likes of Iron Man or Captain America.
Mutants were under the 20th Century Fox umbrella, while Disney held the rights to the rest of Earth's Mightiest Heroes. The Marvel IP was scattered across two different studios, which prevented some characters from interacting with each other for years. Fortunately, that finally changed when Disney purchased 20th Century Fox.
Now, superhero fans have witnessed more and more mutants slowly appear in the MCU. Ms. Marvel and (very likely) Wonder Man were born with a peculiar mutation that gives them special abilities and makes them unique. Furthermore, heroes like Gambit and X-23 took audiences by surprise with their appearance in Deadpool & Wolverine. More recently, Jean Grey took New York hostage during the events of Spider-Man: Brand New Day, giving us but a glimpse of her power.
The curtain has slowly dropped over the last few years, but now it has been completely ripped apart.

The X-Men cast takes center stage at D23
D23 is finally here, and it has brought with it announcements from properties like Star Wars, Pixar, and, of course, Marvel. The superhero giant has been busy crafting the end of its ongoing Multiverse Saga, and while audiences have yet to see either Avengers: Doomsday or Avengers: Secret Wars, it's already time to look at what lies ahead.
Variants of the original X-Men featured in the 20th Century Fox movies will take the spotlight one more time during the events of Avengers: Doomsday, but after that, we'll see new faces take over. Since mutants are bound to play a pivotal part in the next MCU for many years to come, a mighty new cast was needed to rise to the occasion and bring new iterations of these heroes to life. Fortunately, that's exactly what we got.
