Massive Marvel comebacks seemingly confirmed ahead of Avengers: Doomsday

We've been wanting to see the return of these iconic heroes for years, and we may not have to wait much longer.

What started as a standalone movie starring Iron Man has evolved into an ever-expanding franchise featuring countless iconic superheroes. Over the years, more and more Marvel Cinematic Universe characters have debuted on both the big and small screens, saving the day, wreaking havoc, and entertaining audiences around the world. Now, the saga has reached a point at which it is so stacked with heroes, villains, and storylines that not all of them can frequently steal the spotlight.

Characters like Moon Knight, She-Hulk, and the Eternals have been completely sidelined, while veterans such as Doctor Strange have disappeared for years now. In the meantime, the New Avengers and Fantastic Four have risen to the occasion and are gearing up to fight for the fate of the multiverse in Avengers: Doomsday. But the question still stands: When will some of these forgotten MCU legends return to the big screen? At long last, we could finally have an answer.

Hawkeye and the Scarlet Witch will seemingly return in Avengers: Doomsday

According to industry insider Daniel Richtman, Avengers: Doomsday is currently undergoing reshoots, while principal photography for Avengers: Secret Wars will start in late September. Furthermore, these reshoots will serve to "add many more cameos" to the upcoming crossover.

Interestingly, Elizabeth Olsen's stunt double, Jennifer White, has been reposting pictures of herself filming previous MCU movies, hinting that she will go back to the role of the Scarlet Witch. To add more fuel to the fire, White revealed she's currently filming... something, with scooper MyTimeToShineHello claiming that she was on the set of Avengers: Doomsday, wearing Wanda Maximoff's iconic suit. Additionally, alleged behind-the-scenes pictures of this moment are making the rounds online, although we can't rule out the possibility that they were simply made with AI.

The Scarlet Witch wasn't part of the original Avengers: Doomsday cast reveal, and rumors indicated that her long-awaited comeback would happen in Avengers: Secret Wars. Fortunately, it seems the reshoots will change that, and the only question remaining is: What role will she have in this year's film?

If Elizabeth Olsen herself isn't present on the Avengers: Doomsday set, and all of the character's scenes are filmed with her stunt double, then it isn't far-fetched to assume Wanda Maximoff won't have much screen time. Perhaps we could see her in Battleworld, or in disguise as one of Doctor Doom's witches. But regardless of the situation, all signs seem to suggest she will finally be back.

Similarly, Jeremy Renner posted a cryptic image on his social media accounts, hinting that he will suit up as Hawkeye once more. Furthermore, insider James Mack revealed that the original Avenger will have a role to play in Avengers: Doomsday. Much like Wanda Maximoff, it is likely that Hawkeye will only have a brief appearance in this film year before jumping into action in Avengers: Secret Wars. However, it's nice to know he's coming back sooner than expected.

Perhaps the biggest question in store is whether any more cameos will be filmed in the ongoing Avengers: Doomsday reshoots. Legendary characters like the Hulk and Captain Marvel weren't part of the original cast announcement either, so there's a chance that they will briefly show up in the upcoming crossover as well. After all, the collapse of the multiverse is bound to affect all MCU heroes alike.

Granted, it's always important to take rumors with a grain of salt. Besides, we know Marvel sometimes likes to cut already-filmed cameos, as was the case with Claire Temple in Spider-Man: Brand New Day. But at the very least, we know the door is open for the Scarlet Witch and Hawkeye to return to the MCU sooner than expected, and that alone is more than enough.

Avengers: Doomsday will be released on Dec. 18, 2026.
