It's not hyperbole to say that Avengers: Doomsday is one of the most anticipated movies on the Hollywood calendar right now. We still know very little about it, but Marvel Studios have managed to turn the tide with the film, which is due for release in May 2026, by completely reinventing it. That reinvention starts and ends with Robert Downey Jr.'s Doctor Doom, who comes in as the new big bad of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, replacing Kang the Conqueror.

It also marks the beginning of the conclusion of the franchise's Multiverse Saga, bringing a multitude of moments and storylines of the past three years (and the next two) together to lay the foundation for the bigger one: Avengers: Secret Wars. It's an ambitious feat, but Marvel has pulled it off before, ending its Infinity Saga with the double-hitter of Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame. Those movies brought countless characters from the MCU franchise together, reuniting some and having others meet for the first time.

You can bet that these next two will do the same. In fact, reports say one reunion is happening sooner than you might think.

Thor and Loki rumored to reunite in the Avengers: Doomsday final battle

According to a new report from Marvel scooper account Marvel News, Thor and Loki will have meet during the events of Avengers: Doomsday and reunite for the final act of the film. They have labelled the scoop as a "rumor" for the moment, but it is worth noting as it isn't the first time that a reunion between the Asgardian brothers has come up as potentially happening in the near-future (although most speculated that it would be in Avengers: Secret Wars).

Thor is one of the original Avengers, and one of the very few of them who are still with the franchise. We last saw the character in 2022's Thor: Love and Thunder when he took on Gorr the God Butcher and adopted his daughter as his own, naming her Love. It could have served as something of a fitting conclusion to his storyline, but the film told us that the God of Thunder would return. A fifth Thor movie is reportedly in development, while Chris Hemsworth is also expected to appear in both upcoming Avengers movies.

Love and Thunder was the first movie in the Thor franchise not to feature Tom Hiddleston as Loki. There are multiple reasons for that, with the main one being that the God of Mischief was killed by Thanos in Avengers: Infinity War when he attempted to protect his brother from the Mad Titan. However, there is an alternate version of the character out there in the timeline; the one that tried to take over the world in 2012 and absconded with the Tesseract when The Avengers crossed paths with him during their time travels in Avengers: Endgame. And that one went on to headline his own TV series.

Tom Hiddleston returned to the role for two seasons of Disney Plus' Loki, which ended with the Trickster making the ultimate sacrifice. After the complete degradation of the Sacred Loom in the Time Variance Authority, Loki stepped in to become the new God of Stories, overseeing all of the branched timelines and their stories from a throne at the end of time. It all goes through him, and it was a noble sacrifice to make as it ensured that he had the one thing out there in the world he never thought he had: People he cared about.

Fans have been longing for Thor to reunite with Loki so that he can see the noble hero that this version of his brother grew into. While Thor's own Loki redeemed himself, he did it all with his brother by his side; this Loki did it on his own, learning of his fate and going out of his way to change who he was. And as a result, he grew into a hero of all things.

With Avengers: Doomsday setting the stage for the conclusion of the Multiverse Saga, Loki will no doubt be called into action again soon as he is the one protecting the timelines. Meanwhile, Thor will likely lead The Avengers into battle against the multiverse's new threat, Doctor Doom. And when those two things collide, the brothers will seemingly have their long-awaited reunion.

There are many moments fans are hoping to see before the Multiverse Saga concludes: A Thor and Loki reunion hug is at the top of that list. Let's hope it comes to fruition.
