On top of an ever-expanding ensemble cast of DC characters, most everybody who appeared in James Gunn’s Superman is set to return in the follow-up, Man of Tomorrow. However, quite a few cast members will be seen elsewhere, beyond when that film hits screens next summer.
We already saw Guy Gardner (Nathan Fillion) mug for the camera again in the last episode of Lanterns and Jimmy Olsen (Skyler Gisondo) is the focal point of DC Studios’ next big swing at streaming, The People vs. Gorilla Grodd. That mockumentary series is still in production, yet its cast is still expected to grow in the name of self-referential in-universe connectivity. Our latest sign of that comes from an exclusive report saying Anthony Carrigan is coming aboard to don the heavy makeup of Metamorpho for phone-sized screens.
According to the story from Murphy’s Multiverse, Carrigan will be back as Metamorpho, and he won’t be alone. He and his Justice Gang comrades, Hawkgirl (Isabela Merced) and Mister Terrific (Edi Gathegi), will appear in The People vs. Gorilla Grodd along with the team’s benefactor, Maxwell Lord (Sean Gunn).
But the team reassembling may not amount to much in the end; the report notes that the entirety of the whole gang's screen time will be brief. What’s more, considering how one-off cameos in superhero cinema and TV usually go, Metamorpho and the team’s role in the series might serve strictly to play up the humor rather than move the plot forward. In other words, our guess is the Justice Gang probably won’t help Olsen clear Grodd’s name.
The People vs. Gorilla Grodd rides the true-crime wave to poke fun at the docuseries genre. From American Vandal creators Tony Yacenda and Dan Perrault, the eight-part mockumentary shall depict Jimmy Olsen reopening the case against Grodd to find out if the Prince of Gorilla City was railroaded when he stood trial for murdering his father and cannibalizing his dad’s brains.
Grodd is liable to spend much of his eponymous show behind bars, so he has something in common with Metamorpho. The last time we saw the metahuman shapeshifter, he did Lex Luthor’s bidding from the confines of a glass box in a supermax prison dimension the megalomaniac created. His tasks included torturing Superman with synthetic Kryptonite until the two broke out to rescue Metamorpho’s baby son. Soon after, the latter joined the Justice Gang in ending the war between Boravia and Jarhanpur.
Man of Tomorrow is scheduled for a July 9, 2027, theatrical release. The People vs. Gorilla Grodd’s premiere will follow that act, as the show takes place after the film's events.
