Moon Knight's MCU future finally addressed by Oscar Isaac

It's been over four years since we last saw Moon Knight in the MCU, so when will the character return? Oscar Isaac finally talks about his new Marvel project.

Superhero fans had to wait 14 years since the inception of the Marvel Cinematic Universe to see Moon Knight join the action. At long last, the iconic anti-hero had his own Disney+ series that not only acted as an origin story but also opened the door for more supernatural stories and characters to steal the spotlight further down the line. The future seemed bright for Marc Spector, and the only question remaining was: When will he show up next? Well, four years have gone by since the character's debut, and we don't have an answer just yet.

With big crossover movies such as Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars just around the corner, many wondered whether Marvel could surprise us and finally bring back Moon Knight into the fold and make him team up with Earth's Mightiest Heroes. Unfortunately, the actor behind the anti-hero, Oscar Isaac, has denied that this will be the case. To make matters worse, Disney hasn't renewed the character's show for a second season. Does that mean Marc's story is over? Well, after years of living in the dark, we finally have a tease of what's to come, and it is better than expected.

Oscar Isaac teases Moon Knight's return in a Midnight Sons movie

During the Happy Sad Confused podcast with Josh Horowitz, Oscar Isaac revealed that there have been talks about a Midnight Sons movie at Marvel. Not only that, but it seems the project is a reality, and he'll reprise his role as Moon Knight in it:

"There was an interesting talk about Midnight Sons. I mean, again, 'fragility' is not the right word, but tonally, it's really important, because we're playing with real stuff with that one. It's expressing something very real, and challenging, and difficult. I feel like if you're going to go... you gotta take it really seriously. Even though it's a crazy comic book, but that's what it's trying to do; it's doing both of those things."

Furthermore, when presented with the idea of Ryan Gosling playing the role of Ghost Rider, Oscar said: "Make it happen, fellas. I mean, it's a no-brainer."

What makes Oscar's statement all the more interesting is that he's talking about the project in the present-tense, seemingly confirming that we'll get the crossover at some point. This isn't the first time we've heard about a Midnight Sons film, as multiple reports have indicated that it will be part of the MCU's next phase. After the ongoing Multiverse Saga comes to an end, the mutants and supernatural characters are rumored to take over the spotlight.

According to Alex Perez (via The Cosmic Circus), Marvel is looking to adapt the Damnation comic book series on the big screen, where Mephisto creates his own version of hell in our world. The MCU has already planted the seeds for such a storyline with Ironheart, where it was revealed that not only does Mephisto exist in this universe, but that he has been striking deals with many key figures throughout the years, and will presumably force them to enforce his will when the time comes.

As was to be expected, there will be a long road leading to the events of a Midnight Sons crossover. Marvel is reportedly developing a sequel to Werewolf by Night and Moon Knight, though it wasn't specified if they will be Disney+ series once again. Furthermore, a Strange Academy project has been rumored to be in development for quite some time now. And who knows? Maybe one day that long-awaited Blade movie might actually hit theaters.

It is safe to say that Marvel bit off more than it could chew during the Multiverse Saga. Big characters like Moon Knight, She-Hulk, Werewolf, Mephisto, and even the Eternals were introduced, only for them to never be seen again. But after the two upcoming Avengers films come to an end, the MCU will bring those seemingly-abandoned heroes back into the mix. Hopefully, it won't be long before Marvel unveils what its next phase of projects will look like, and with a bit of luck, a Moon Knight sequel and a Midnight Sons movie are part of those plans.
