My Adventures With Superman is finally coming back, and it looks to adapt a classic Superman tale!
It’s been over two years since My Adventures With Superman last aired on HBO Max. The acclaimed animated series puts a different spin on the classic Superman mythos, with Clark Kent (Jack Quaid) being more of the focus. Season 2 ended with Superman saving Earth from Brainiac and welcoming Supergirl as a fellow protector.
At last, HBO has confirmed My Adventures With Superman season 3 will debut first during Adult Swim's Toonami anime/action block on Saturday, June 13, at midnight ET/PT with a streaming release on HBO Max the next day. That makes it easy for viewers to catch up with season 3, which is expected to run ten episodes. It’s also interesting timing, given the new Supergirl movie is due to hit theaters on June 26.
Showrunner Jake Wyatt explained the long delay to EW, citing first the logistics of crafting an animated series. Also, the Warner Bros-Discovery merger created a “wait and see” period with Wyatt insisting that HBO was always supportive and “We just needed the stars and the bank accounts to align."
We can expect the entire voice cast back, including Quaid, Alice Lee as Lois Lane, Ishmel Sahid as Jimmy Olsen, Chris Parnell as Slade Wilson/Deathstroke, Max Mittleman as Lex Luthor, Byron Marc Newsome as John Henry Irons, and Kiana Madeira as Kara Zor-El/Supergirl.
As for the season 3 plotline, the first poster confirmed that it adapts the iconic “Reign of the Supermen” storyline from the 1990s but with a new twist!

"Clark has truly become Superman and made peace with his Kryptonian origins – he’s ready to settle down! But Lois, who has finally become the Planet’s star reporter, is NOT. Jimmy has evolved from freelance photographer to celebrity journalist—but he’s still intimidated by the romantic attentions of the newly arrived Kara Zor‑El, who’s trying to find her place on Earth."
"In our latest action, comedy, and romance-packed season, this found family will have to confront powerful new enemies that challenge Superman, threaten their future, and test the bonds holding them together. Can our heroes save their tomorrow–before it destroys today?"
Following the famed 1992 “Death of Superman” storyline, “Reign of the Supermen” dominated the Superman books as four would-be Supermen popped up: A Cyborg, the Eradicator (a Kryptonian figure), the clone Superboy, and John Henry Irons as Steel. The Cyborg was revealed to be Hank Henshaw, a scientist transformed by cosmic radiation who would become a perennial Superman foe.
The storyline has been adapted before in an animated film, yet it’s intriguing how the series will tackle it without the “Death” storyline setting it up. Wyatt stated that while he made the writers read the comics first, this won’t be the same story.
“It's more about, "What would we do with that premise now? It's less Death [of Superman] and more about, 'What's a Superman?' The fun thing about Reign of the Supermen is that it's all these impostors who have the same power set but different values."
Yes, this means Superboy will be part of the series with Wyatt teasing less the ‘90s rebel and more appealing.
“Superboy can't just push Clark's buttons. So Superboy's been adjusted to be more relevant to all of our characters, and then he is going to embody the tension between hope in the present and fear in the future.... He was the writers' and the artists' favorite character for the season, and we're going to complicate him a bit over the course of it."
As for Irons, right now, it doesn’t sound like he’ll become the armored Steel just yet, but Wyatt hints that a possible season 4 will give him more material. However, Lex Luthor will become a more prominent foe than before, whose hatred of Superman is because it’s something Lex can’t control.
Other plot threads will include Kara seeing Jimmy as a potential mate and introducing Jessica Cruz, who will be getting her own planned My Adventures with Green Lantern spinoff series. We’ll have to see how it unfolds, yet it’s wonderful that once more this animated Superman series will fly high for fans.
My Adventures With Superman season 3 premieres June 13 on HBO Max.
