The Marvel Cinematic Universe loves to raise questions that will be answered multiple years down the line. The superhero franchise is very good at setting the scene for upcoming storylines, and this has held true throughout its ongoing Multiverse Saga.
There are many mysteries waiting to be resolved in the two upcoming Avengers movies, such as where Doctor Strange went after embarking on a new quest with Clea, or whether Monica Rambeau will be able to return to her home universe after being transported to a world filled with mutants. But there's a question that has been haunting Marvel fans for years now: What truly happened to the Scarlet Witch?
During the events of Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, Wanda Maximoff seemingly sacrifices herself to destroy all copies of the Darkhold, ensuring no one falls victim to its dark magic again. However, audiences never really saw her corpse afterward, leading some to believe that she may have escaped death at the very last second. Unfortunately, the latest VisionQuest trailer has put all speculation to rest.

A new VisionQuest trailer confirms the Scarlet Witch is dead
Marvel released a new look at VisionQuest ahead of the show's release on Disney+, and it is packed with many surprises. The footage gives us our first look at Jocasta Pym and Jim Hammond's Human Torch, while also unveiling more about Ultron's true, wicked plan. However, one of the most interesting details comes at the 44-second mark in the trailer, when Ultron finally reveals Wanda Maximoff's true fate by saying, "That dead witch really did a number on you."
Agatha All Along, the second project in the WandaVision trilogy, also hinted that the Scarlet Witch is dead, but audiences never got an explicit confirmation. After all, Agatha had visions of Wanda's dead body, but they were simply the result of a magic spell. Furthermore, when Agatha asks Death how Wanda died, Death simply replies, "Wrong question. That witch is gone."
Fans assumed there was a very big difference between being "dead" and "gone." As such, multiple theories started to arise about Wanda's true fate, with some even suggesting that the Time Variance Authority took her outside of time moments before her death. This idea started to gain even more momentum when Marvel released a TVA comic book series in which Wanda was seen inside some sort of containment unit at the TVA. Unfortunately, it was eventually confirmed that the series isn't canon to the events of the MCU. So does this mean Wanda truly met her end?
There are a few things to take into consideration. Everyone in the MCU assumes Wanda is dead, but no one has been able to completely verify it. Agatha simply believes that the Scarlet Witch met her end, which explains why her mind pictured the witch's corpse. Similarly, there's a chance that Ultron is simply working with publicly available data and has concluded that Wanda is dead, although there could be a chance this isn't the case.
The whole world may believe Wanda is gone, but it doesn't mean that's what actually happened. And even if everyone's favorite witch truly died, multiple reports indicate that she will be back in both Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars. Moreover, Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige confirmed that it is just a matter of time before the Scarlet Witch returns to the big screen.
Just like Doctor Doom "collected" Bruce Banner in one of the post-credits scenes of Avengers Endgame: Encore, there's a chance that he did the same with Wanda Maximoff, who is rumored to be one of the mysterious Latverian Witches aiding Doom in his mission to reign supreme over the multiverse. But if we rule out the possibility that Wanda escaped death, then it will be interesting to see how she will be brought back to life.
Many questions remain unanswered regarding the Scarlet Witch's fate in the MCU. On the bright side, it won't be long before we start getting some answers. VisionQuest is perhaps the best project to give us a hint about Wanda's whereabouts, especially since the whole WandaVision trilogy began with her. But even if that doesn't happen, then all signs suggest we'll see the Scarlet Witch once more in Avengers: Doomsday.
VisionQuest will be released on Oct. 14, 2026.
