It looks like there are more Spider-Man animated projects coming with one in particular destined to thrill fans!
While the Marvel Cinematic Universe Spider-Man movies have been successful, it’s in animation that the wall-crawler has really taken off. Into the Spider-Verse was a smash hit in 2018, with the film ultimately winning the Oscar for Best Animated Feature. It introduced Miles Morales, the Spider-Man of another Earth, who becomes part of an adventure with multiple Spider champions.
That included Spider-Gwen/Ghost Spider (Hailee Steinfeld) and Spider-Noir (Nicholas Cage). It was followed by the 2023 sequel Across the Spider-Verse, which ended on a big cliffhanger. That’s set to conclude in Beyond the Spider-Verse, which has hit several delays and is scheduled for release sometime in 2027.
However, just like the MCU, Sony is preparing to expand the Spider-Verse franchise. There’s already the live-action Spider-Noir series with Cage reprising his role, but now, one of the more notable Spider-Men is getting his own film!
A Spider-Punk movie is in development at Sony
Deadline reports that Sony Pictures Animation is in early development on a Spider-Punk animated feature from co-writers Daniel Kaluuya and Ajon Singh. This would have Kaluuya reprising his role from the second film as Hobie Brown, the Spider-Man of Earth-138.
This Spider-Man splits his time between playing punk rock and fighting the establishment, with a sardonic humor. The art design for the character was notable for more of a “punk” edge - hence the name, Spider-Punk.

Rumor has it that this isn’t the only animated project in the works as insider Daniel Richtman reported that Sony is also working on animated films based on Venom and Spider-Women. Venom should be no surprise as Sony found box office success with the live-action films based on the antihero, while it makes sense that one focusing on Spider-Women would come next as well.
This comes after Sony’s attempts at a live-action “Spider-Verse” fell apart after the box office bombs of Madame Web, Morbius and Kraven the Hunter. It appears attempting Spider-Man spinoffs that don't actually feature Spider-Man don't connect with moviegoers. The fact each of those films was subjected to numerous reshoots and horrible reviews didn't help.
So, turning to animation might be a safer bet after the success of the Spider-Verse movies. They're already established hits and fans would be inclined to check out the various Spider champions and exploring each of these worlds has great potential. There’s also how animation fits Spider-Man better for more vibrant action and making the characters more like the comic book versions.
This is still in the early stages, so likely a few years before it comes out, but a Spider-Punk movie could be the start of a new animated Spider-Verse that can succeed where the live-action version failed.
Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse is streaming on Disney+.
