Since its initial announcement, The Batman: Part II has been shrouded in mystery. Even as principal photography takes place in the UK, fans have yet to learn who the film's main villain is or what the plot will be about. Instead, all we've gotten are conflicting reports about the roles of the new cast members and even a delay announcement (yet again). But amidst all the confusion, there have been a few clues that may just point us in the right direction.
Director Matt Reeves revealed that the main villain of The Batman: Part II has never been done in a film before, implying that we're about to see an antagonist that hasn't appeared in any live-action adaptation to date. Furthermore, he also stated that the film's story will dig into the "deeper corruption" rooted in Gotham City. Those two descriptions led fans to speculate that the Court of Owls will have a role to play in the Caped Crusader's upcoming adventure, and a new casting detail just doubled down on the theory.
Actor David Twinberrow will portray an "elite patron of a club" in The Batman 2
As revealed by David Twinberrow's profile on Backstage, he will portray the role of an "Elite Patron of Club for New Year Eve" in Matt Reeves' The Batman: Part II. While the description is far from a confirmation that any particular DC character is going to appear in the movie, it does suggest that Twinberrow could be a member of the Court of Owls.
There have been two prominent but conflicting reports about who Scarlett Johansson will portray in The Batman: Part II. However, both of them share one thing in common: her character appears to target and kill some of Gotham's wealthiest members (which could very well be another hint that the Court of Owls is coming).
On the one hand, rumors indicate that Scarlett Johansson will be Harvey Dent's wife, Gilda Dent. Interestingly, Gilda became the Holiday Killer in the popular comic book series Batman: The Long Halloween. During her time as an antagonist, she hunted and killed members of the Carmine Falcone crime family, although The Batman: Part II could easily change this so that the Court is in her crosshairs instead.
On the other hand, it has been reported that Scarlett could be a more realistic version of Poison Ivy, who creates poison from plants and (you guessed it) uses it to target a group of elite members who control Gotham City from the shadows. Coupled with Reeves' comments about telling a story of "deeper corruption," all signs would suggest that the Court is indeed heading to the big screen.
Granted, until DC confirms the Court's participation, this is all pure speculation. After all, it has also been widely reported that Sebastian Stan was cast as Two-Face in The Batman: Part II, and if that were to be the case, he could potentially be the main antagonist of the film.
With The Batman: Part II being delayed all the way until 2028, it's unlikely that we'll get any official announcements or trailers soon. Perhaps set photos could eventually reveal some major surprises, but until then, it seems we'll have to wait until next year to start getting some concrete answers about what the future holds for Robert Pattinson's Bruce Wayne.
The Batman: Part II will be released on Feb. 18, 2028.
