2026 has been a big year for superhero adaptations. This year had an explosively good start thanks to the release of acclaimed Disney+ shows such as Wonder Man and Daredevil: Born Again season 2.

Eventually, the wall-crawler took over the small screen as well in Prime Video's Spider-Noir, while the Punisher wreaked havoc in his stand-alone Special Presentation. Supergirl soared through the skies, and the Green Lanterns have been taking the world by storm thanks to their captivating HBO mystery show. Better yet, there are plenty of exciting adventures on the horizon.

Clayface, VisionQuest, and Avengers: Doomsday will all be released in the last months of 2026. However, the year was initially supposed to be even more stacked with the arrival of a highly anticipated superhero sequel. Unfortunately, things didn't go according to plan, and we'll have to wait over a year before we can finally see this long-awaited project hit the big screen.

The Batman: Part II was supposed to be released on Oct. 2, 2026, before being delayed to 2028

Back in March 2022, audiences ventured into a new, twisted version of Gotham City with the release of Matt Reeves' The Batman. While some fans were initially skeptical of this new take on the character, Robert Pattinson quickly cemented himself as one of the best iterations of the World's Greatest Detective. Audiences were eager to watch what was next for this version of Batman, but unfortunately, they were met with multiple delays.

The Batman: Part II was originally meant to be released on Oct. 3, 2025, but it was pushed back in the midst of the 2023 actors' and writers' strikes. The sequel was then given a release date of Oct. 2, 2026, meaning fans were meant to see the Caped Crusader back on the big screen this year. Unfortunately, the list of shifts didn't end there, as The Batman: Part II was moved to Oct. 1, 2027, before landing on a (hopefully) definitive release date of Feb. 18, 2028.

Throughout all this time, we have learned virtually nothing about the hero's upcoming adventure. Matt Reeves released a quick teaser that confirmed the film will take place in winter. Furthermore, set pictures have revealed that Robert Pattinson's Batsuit will be almost identical to the one he used in the first installment. But perhaps the biggest announcement was that of the new cast members.

Scarlett Johansson, Sebastian Stan, Charles Dance, Sebastian Koch, and Brian Tyree Henry all joined the production of The Batman: Part II in unannounced roles. The rumor mill indicates that Stan could play the role of either Two-Face or Victor Zsasz. Similarly, conflicting reports indicate that Johansson will portray Gilda Dent or Poison Ivy. Last but certainly not least, Dance is rumored to bring the father of Harvey Dent's father, Christopher Dent, to life.

Unfortunately, none of these castings have been confirmed yet, with fans still waiting to learn who exactly will be the main antagonist of The Batman: Part II. And since the film was delayed all the way until 2028, it's very unlikely we'll learn more about the sequel until 2027. To make matters more complicated, we still don't know when exactly the DC Universe's version of the Caped Crusader will make his live-action debut. So, for the time being, the iconic hero won't return to the big screen in either the rest of 2026 or the entirety of 2027.

On the bright side, principal photography for The Batman: Part II is currently underway in the United Kingdom. That means the film is very unlikely to be delayed a fifth time. And with a bit of luck, the upcoming superhero projects from both DC and Marvel will make the wait for the DC Elseworlds sequel feel a little shorter.

The Batman: Part II will be released on Feb. 18, 2028.
