Peacemaker season 2's biggest surprise is one nobody saw coming

The seventh episode of Peacemaker season 2 featured one of the biggest surprises of the season.

When Christopher Smith made his first trip to an alternate dimension in Peacemaker season 2, he thought it was everything he’d ever wanted. His brother and father were alive, and they were heroes. But not ordinary heroes; they were revered around the world for their bravery. After things in his universe started spiraling out of control, and he thought that Emilia Harcourt had betrayed him (she was actually saving his life), Chris decided to go to the world he thought was a utopia and stay.

Eventually, the 11th Street Kids went to save Peacemaker. After arriving, Harcourt immediately realized that she hadn’t seen any people of color since she arrived. When she met with Chris, she pointed this out and showed him that there was a Nazi symbol on the American Flag. She also showed him the giant painting of Hitler on the wall of A.R.G.U.S. (that he somehow missed).

Comic book and Arrowverse fans knew that this meant they were on a version of Earth-X - a world where Germany won World War II. And while it was obvious to a lot of people before the previous episode of the DC Universe show, a lot of us (me included) didn’t realize what was going on until it was officially revealed.

Everything in this world was racist, xenophobic, homophobic, and more. However, there was one ironic thing about this Earth. Peacemaker’s father, Auggie Smith, said that he wasn’t a racist Nazi. In fact, he hated being called that. Personality-wise, this made the opposite of Earth-1’s Blue Dragon (Auggie), who was an extreme bigot.

"I didn't create the problems in my world, missy. I don't agree with them."
Auggie Smith

When Auggie was trying to get everyone back to Peacemaker and his friends back to his universe, Emilia called him a Nazi. Auggie was furious at the suggestion and told her not to call him that. When she mentioned how messed up this world was, he told her: “I fight the madmen, murderers, and monsters in front of me, because that’s all I can control.”

While many fans have pointed out that Auggie could have done more as a superhero to create change, it was clear that he wasn't the same vindictive person as his Earth-1 doppelganger. For the first time in Chris's life, he saw a version of his father that wasn't an abusive, evil excuse of a human being. He and his son, Keith, did the best they could and fought back against oppression and protected innocent people regardless of who they were or what their country told them.

Sadly, thanks to a misunderstanding of the situation, Auggie was stabbed to death by Vigilante. After that, Keith went berserk and tried to kill Peacemaker. Luckily for him, his friends stopped him. However, Chris told them to stop before they murdered his brother.

As the crew is making their way back to their home world, Emilia makes a decision. She knows that Keith will come after Chris, so she decides to kill Keith to protect the man she won’t admit she loves. However, she was stopped before pulling the trigger.

It’s easy to guess this isn’t the last we’ve seen of Keith Smith. Don’t be shocked if the season 2 finale of Peacemaker hinted at him being a major part of a potential season 3. Stay tuned to Bam Smack Pow to find out if that happens.
