Percy Jackson and the Olympians recasts major character for season 2
By Bryce Olin
Percy Jackson and the Olympians has found its Zeus for season 2 and beyond!
According to Disney, Courtney B. Vance has joined the cast to play Zeus in Percy Jackson and the Olympians season 2. Vance takes over for Lance Reddick, who starred as Zeus in the first season of Percy Jackson and the Olympians.
Reddick died at the age of 60 prior to the release of the first season of the series on Disney+. We didn't get to see much of Zeus until the season 1 finale, but Reddick was incredible as the God of the Sky and the guy calling the shots for the Gods in his home of Olympus. Reddick's presence and energy in those key scenes with Percy (Walker Scobell) and Poseidon (Toby Stephens) set the tone of what's to come for Zeus and the rest of the Gods as Percy Jackson and the Olympians continue.
According to a report from The Hollywood Reporter, Vance shared his excitement for joining the cast, but he also had kind words for Reddick, as well.
"I can’t tell you how excited I am to join the extraordinary cast of Percy Jackson and the Olympians. There are few moments in an actor’s career when you can honestly say that you’re about to board a series that has such a devoted fan base filled with characters beloved around the world and is based on a wildly successful book series. I know that stepping into this role of Zeus will be a memorable experience and I’ll be giving my brother, Lance Reddick, who left us way too soon, a heavenly hug."
It's unclear how big of a role Vance will have as Zeus in Percy Jackson and the Olympians season 2. The new season is based on Rick Riordian's The Sea of Monsters, which is the second book of the five-book Percy Jackson and the Olympians series.
There are some big scenes that play out in this part of the story, but I can't recall off the top of my head if Zeus is featured prominently in The Sea of Monsters. I want to say that Zeus isn't in The Sea of Monsters, but that doesn't mean we won't see Vance as Zeus in the new season. Obviously, the books follow Percy's story, but we're going to be seeing a lot more of this world without Percy as the story continues.
Vance isn't the only new cast member for Percy Jackson and the Olympians season 2. Andra Day is joining the series as Athena, Annabeth's mom, while Daniel Diemer will star as Tyson, a huge new character, and Tamara Smart will star as Thalia Grace, another incredible character! We'll also get some appearances from Margaret Cho, Kristen Schaal, and Sandra Bernhard.
In addition, you can also expect to see Scobell, Stephens, Leah Jeffries, Aryan Simhadri, Virginia Kull, Charlie Bushnell, Jason Mantzoukis, and more in season 2!
We're expecting a few more casting announcements as we get closer to Percy Jackson and the Olympians season 2, but it looks like the main roles have been announced.
Percy Jackson and the Olympians season 2 will be one of the biggest shows coming in 2025! We're not sure when the new season is slated to be released, but production on the new season started this summer and is still happening right now. If production wraps late this year or early next year, we should see Percy Jackson and the Olympians season 2 on Disney+ by the late summer/fall of 2025.
We'll just have to wait and see what happens, but we're super excited for Vance to join the series!
Stay tuned for more news about Percy Jackson and the Olympians season 2.
