It's been a big week in the world of comics, and this week's new comic books have something for everyone. From the stories centred on Superman and Wonder Woman to the big return in Jenny Sparks and a game-changing issue of Deadpool.

And there is some variety in there, too. Yes, while there are tie-ins to DC Comics’ Absolute Power and Marvel’s X-Men: From the Ashes, the pick of the week comes from Image Comics and it’s not connected to the Energon Universe.

Let’s get right into it.

The Power Fantasy No. 2 (pick of the week)

  • Writer: Kieron Gillen
  • Artist: Caspar Wijngaard

The Power Fantasy is a world where six people have powers. Luckily, they have agreed to keep things cordial and not take over the world. That idea may have changed at the end of issue No. 1 when the governments try to fight superpowers. They learn that they're fighting above their power level. However, we also saw how the superpowers police their own. Issue 2 should show how the superpowers react when their "family" breaks the rules.

Wonder Woman No. 13

  • Writer: Tom King
  • Artist: Tony Salvador Daniel

In the previous issue of Wonder Woman, Diana and Robin (Damian Wayne) found where Amanda Waller is holding people with powers. During Absolute Power: Task Force VII No. 6, Steve Trevor sees Wonder Woman and Robin as he’s trying to escape. It looks like an old-school prison break is about to happen. This is exactly what's needed as Absolute Power begins to wind down.

X-Men No. 4

  • Writer: Jed MacKay
  • Artist: Netho Diaz

Trevor Fitzroy and the Upstarts are streaming mutant murders live for the world to see in Marvel's X-Men. Thankfully the X-Men will be around to stop them.

The bigger story is how Cyclops will handle things. The end of X-Men No. 3 shows him having a panic attack. Will this make him a liability in the field? Do the other X-Men know what's going on? Can he overcome it?

Superman No. 18

  • Writer: Joshua Williamson
  • Artist: Jamal Campbell

Writer note: The events of this issue happened before Absolute Power No. 3 was released.

Superman and Zatanna found the Dark Paths. Now they can travel anywhere. But what was the cost? Neron says he can help but readers know he only makes deals when the price is right. Did Superman or Zatanna give up something important to save the world?

Absolute Power: Super Son No. 1

  • Writers: Sina Grace and Nicole Maines
  • Artists: John Timms and Travis Mercer

After days (or weeks) of being controlled by Brainiac Queen and Amanda Waller, Jon Kent (Superman) has control over his own body again. Thankfully, despite being traumatized, he’ll help fight back. However, what are the effects of having Brainiac Queen in his head and being controlled by her?

Jenny Sparks No. 2

  • Writer: Tom King
  • Artist: Jeff Spokes

Captain Atom has hostages in a bar and he has three demands: He wants to be God, he wants his family returned from the past, and he wants a sandwich. Before the police can begin negotiations, Jenny Sparks returns from the dead (Captain Atom killed her in issue 1). Will Jenny save the day or make things worse?

Deadpool No. 6

  • Writer: Cody Ziglar
  • Artist: Roge Antonio

This is supposed to be the issue where Wade Wilson dies. After Death Grip tore into Deadpool with shards of the Muramasa Blade (Deadpool No. 4 and 5), that’s a real possibility. How will his daughter Ellie deal with her dad’s death after just getting him back?

Dazzler No. 1

  • Writer: Jason Loo
  • Artist: Terry Dodson

Dazzler is long overdue for a solo series and Marvel picked the right time to release it. Alison Blaire (a.k.a. Dazzler herself) is back on tour and she brought Domino, Strong Guy, and Multiple Man with her. There’s no way anything can go wrong, right? Right?!

X-Factor No. 2

  • Writer: Mark Russell
  • Artist: Bob Quinn

Havok wanted to be more than an X-Man and he got his wish. After most of Angel’s team is killed on their first mission, Alex is running X-Factor. Grab this issue to see if Havok’s insecurities of being in Cyclops’ shadow cause more deaths. If it does, it’ll be good for his boss’ ratings.

Destro No. 4

  • Writer: Dan Watters
  • Artists:  Andrei Bressan and Adriano Lucas

The official description for Destro No. 4 is the titular character's kill list. There’s no way this won’t be good. It should be full of cool weapons drawn by some of the comic books’ best artists. This is also the penultimate issue of Destro. Whatever happens here will change the course of the Energon Universe.

Void Rival No. 1 (classic pick)

  • Writer: Robert Kirkman
  • Artists: Matheus Lopes and Lorenzo De Felici

Now that the first twelve issues of Void Rivals are done, it’s the perfect time to start the beginning of the Energon Universe. So far, a few things have connected to what’s happening on Earth. However, going back to the beginning could reveal things missed during their first read.
