2024 has been a bit of a quiet year regarding superhero adaptations. On the one side, Marvel was backed into a corner after a series of critical failures with their most recent movies and series. So instead of producing as many live-action projects as possible, they decided to put on the breaks and rethink their strategy moving forward. On the other side, DC will reboot its live-action cinematic universe in 2025 under the helm of James Gunn and Peter Safran. But while we wait for that date to come, things have been pretty quiet from the Batman and Superman house.

Fortunately, that doesn't mean there aren't exciting movies and series from Marvel and DC still coming this year. From the only big screen Marvel project to be released in 2024, to the expansion of Robert Patinson's Batman universe on streaming services. Here are the five most exciting superhero adaptations we can't wait to see! (Note: this list is presented by release order).

Deadpool & Wolverine

Are we about to witness a comeback? Many things have been said about Marvel and their inability to keep its same level of quality after Avengers: Endgame. But even with all the recent negativity, we can't deny that Deadpool & Wolverine looks like it will finally turn things around.

The Merc With a Mouth has been the protagonist of two amazing live-action movies where he's cracked jokes, sliced heads off, and even traveled through time. However, one thing that many fans have waited for a long time was to see him team up with Logan himself. Fortunately, that will become a reality pretty soon as Hugh Jackman will return to the role that helped redefine superhero movies in the early 2000s.

To say Deadpool & Wolverine is one of the most anticipated movies of the year isn't an exaggeration. It appears audiences are in for a wild ride that will involve R-rated violence, multiversal cameos, heartbreaking moments, and lots of blood. The best part is that we won't have to wait long to see if Marvel has another success on its hands, as Deadpool & Wolverine will be released in just a few weeks (at the time of writing this) on July 26.

The Penguin

While The Penguin isn't a part of the new universe crafted by James Gunn and Peter Safran, it falls under the Elseworlds tag; a series of projects separate from the main DC continuity. Think of it as a parallel universe where creators have the freedom to tell any number of independent stories that don't need to tie into a bigger overarching narrative.

However, that doesn't mean The Penguin will make use of a blank canvas. The HBO series will expand on the Matt Reves Batman universe, where audiences saw Robert Pattinson save Gotham City from the Riddler back in 2022. After all - now Carmine Falcone is out of the picture - a perfect setting is set for Oswald Cobblepot to rise to power. And you know he'll make the most out of that opportunity any day of the week.

The series will have a TV-MA rating due to its violence and grim tone. That only makes us the more excited for this villain story set in one of DC's darkest cities. As if it wasn't enough, audiences should also expect a lot of "delicious twists and turns and new characters" as indicated by the head of originals at Max, Sarah Aubrey. So all in all, we can't wait to see what Oswald Cobblepot will be up to when The Penguin releases on HBO Max on September 8.

Agatha All Along

When WandaVision premiered on Disney+ back on January 15, 2021, it took the world by storm due to its refreshing take on superhero stories, its unnerving mystery, and amazing performances from the likes of Elizabeth Olsen and Paul Bettany. However, a great part of the show's success was due to the amazing characters it introduced, such as Agatha herself. In fact, she was so beloved by fans that a spin-off centered around her will be released later this year.

Unlike WandaVision, however, Agatha All Along seems like a dark and twisted series that'll make the most out of the MCU's supernatural side in the creepiest way possible. It seems like a refreshing departure from every Marvel project that has come before, especially considering the only other "scary" movie was Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness (even if it wasn't all that scary to begin with). So not only is that dark tone something to look forward to, but its story also seems like it could be beyond memorable.

It seems Agatha All Along will deal with the ramifications of Wanda's death while giving its titular character a huge hurdle to overcome. Can Agatha recover her powers? And how will she be able to put up a fight against Aubrey Plaza's antagonistic character while she does so? And speaking about mysteries, how will Billy Maximoff influence the story, and where is his brother Tommy? Well, there's only one way to find out. Agatha All Along will be released on Disney+ on September 18.

Joker: Folie à Deux

The original Joker movie shattered expectations when it premiered in 2019. Now, half a decade later, its sequel is finally coming to theaters. So, yeah, it's been long overdue.

Just like The Penguin, Joker: Folie à Deux will be an "Elseworlds" story that won't have any impact on the overarching DC storyline. However, that makes it all the more exciting, as anything could happen. Case in point; its predecessor seemingly presented Bruce Wayne's origin story with a huge twist. The Joker inadvertently caused the murder of Bruces' parents unlike in comic book pages. So what else could happen in this highly anticipated sequel?

To add to that excitement, the trailer for Joker: Folie à Deux looks absolutely amazing. However, it also keeps things a little bit vague. While got a look at Lady Gaga's Harley Quinn and some musical numbers, everything else is surrounded in mystery. Besides, even if the trailer gave us a better glimpse at what awaits us in store, could we really trust it? After all, the Joker is an incredibly unreliable narrator (as the first movie proved). With that in mind, it's impossible to really know what to expect when Joaquin Phoenix reprises one of cinema's most iconic roles. However, one thing's for sure: we'll be in movie theaters on October 4 to find out once and for all.

Venom: The Last Dance

The Venom saga is coming to an end.

It's crazy to think we live in a world where the Lethal Protector could potentially have a complete trilogy of its own and not fight Spider-Man once. However, if recent rumors are to be believed, maybe Venom: The Last Dance could look to change that. After all, It would be a dream come true for this iteration of Eddie Brock to face his archnemesis before he says his goodbyes. Besides, it would also open the doors for Venom to finally sport his signature white spider logo for one movie, at the very least.

But even if that exciting cameo doesn't happen, we could still be looking at the best chapter in the Venom franchise. One that features a full-on alien invasion, military agencies hunting Eddie Brock, and... a symbiote bonding with a horse? Count. Us. In.

It's no secret that the previous two Venom movies aren't as polished as other beloved superhero projects. However, they do are fun pop-corn flicks with lots of action sequences and comical elements. It may not be the most ideal tone for a villain as threatening as Venom, but it is one that has proved to be a hit with audiences in the past. So let's hope Sony manages to end things on a great note when Venom: The Last Dance premieres later this year on October 25.
