Marvel Comics Blood Hunt concludes, DC Comics Absolute Power could take a turn, why Grim and Saga are must-reads, and more comic books you should grab this week!

Saga No. 67

The last week of new comic books for July is producing important stories. The Marvel Comics crossover Blood Hunt is wrapping up. A new comic book from X-Men: From the Ashes debuts and adds more depth to a classic character's mutant powers. And one of the best comic books ever returns. Plus, the last section gives you a “not new” comic book to check out.

Let’s not waste any time and get right into things.

PICK OF THE WEEK!

  • Writer: Brian K. Vaughan
  • Artist: Fiona Staples

Blood Hunt No. 5

  • Writer: Jed MacKay
  • Artist: Pepe Larraz

This is where we find out if Blood Hunt was good or not. So far, it’s been a fun ride with violence and blood throughout. However, there have to be repercussions at the end of the series. If not, this could be considered a waste of a crossover. Thankfully, Jed MacKay hasn’t let readers down yet.

This will end with the beginning of Marvel's crossover One World Under Doom.

X-Force No.1

  • Writer: Geoffrey Thorne
  • Artist: Marcus To

The premiere issues of X-Men: From the Ashes continue with X-Force. This series will further Forge’s mutant abilities to more than machines. He can now see how things need to be fixed. He’ll use those abilities to build a team to solve those problems. That team is Rachel Summers, Betsy Braddock, Sage, and newcomer Tank.

That’s not all. There will be guest stars throughout the series with the first being the Merc with a Mouth, Deadpool.

Absolute Power: Task Force VII No. 3

  • Writer: Jeremy Adams
  • Artist: Marco Santucci

Amanda Waller’s Task Force VII Amazo robots continue to have unforeseen issues. Black Adam pointed out that Task Force VII didn’t just absorb powers and abilities (Absolute Power: Task Force VII No. 1). They also took on personality traits. In Absolute Power: Task Force VII No. 3, Amazo Jadestone is given free will thanks to Allen Scott’s ring.

This could be the beginning of Task Force VII seeing the error in Amanda Waller’s plan and taking over. Little by little, Task Force VII is doing whatever they want. Once they realize they're right and Waller is wrong, Absolute Power could take a turn.

Fantastic Four No. 22

  • Writer: Ryan North
  • Artist: Ivan Fiorelli

Reed Richards and Alicia Masters continue to protect innocent people from becoming vampires or vampire food. Reed’s been stretching himself thin (literally and figuratively) and it’s been amazing to see how creative he can be and his determination not to fail. One question that needs to be answered is what’s going on with the rest of their family while they’re away.

Ultimate Spider-Man No. 7

  • Writer: Jonathan Hickman
  • Artist: Marco Checchetto

Grim No. 19

  • Writer: Stephanie Phillips
  • Artist: Flaviano

I picked up issue No. 1 of Grim last week and never looked back. The gorgeous artwork perfectly complements an interesting play on the lore of death, life, and Hell itself. Stephanie Phillips proves why she was picked to write a Marvel comic starring Jean Grey.

X-Men: Heir Of Apocalypse No. 4

  • Writer: Steve Foxe
  • Artist: Netho Diaz

We’ll finally see who becomes the Heir of Apocalypse. Will it be one of the competitors En Sabah Nur picked or someone else? This writer believes Archangel (Warren Worthington the third) is the right choice and this was Apocalypse’s plan.

Warren had a moment of clarity after he and Apocalypse fought and then talked (Heir of Apocalypse No. 3). He seemed to understand what was happening. Plus, since Warren was one of Apocalypse's first created Horsemen in Marvel Comics (X-Factor No. 24 by Louise Simonson) and was Apocalypse during Uncanny X-Force, it's only right he's next in line.

Ms. Marvel Annual (2024) No. 1

  • Writers: Iman Vellani, Sabir Pirzada, Derek Landy
  • Artist: Sara Pichelli

Iman Vellani's journey into co-writing comic books has been fun. Marvel has put her with writers to help her get her vision out. It’s helped with her journey into a new era of being a mutant and this Annual will help. It may be part of the Infinity Watch crossover, but whatever happens, will be part of her story in NYX.

Not-new pick of the week!

  • Comic book: Transformers No. 1
  • Writer: Daniel Warren Johnson
  • Artist: Daniel Warren Johnson

Off the heels of his two Eisner Awards, it seems like a good time to (yet again) sing the praises of Daniel Warren Johnson’s Transformers. It’s been nothing short of fantastic in every area. There’s the depth of the story, hard-hitting action with wrestling moves, and the continued progressions of the Energon Universe. If you're a Transformers fan or looking to read something new, pick this issue up and enjoy the greatness.
